Saw this for £9 and thought it was a bargain and took a punt. Never listened to them before, so looking forward to seeing what they're like.

Excellent purchase. I have a couple of theirs. Whilst i don't consider them top tier you really can't go wrong with 5 albums for a tenner. The Grand Design is very good.

It's not often that I buy music nowadays (Alice Cooper's latest was my last purchase) but I have bought 2 secondhand cds.

Like my parents were, I'm quite a big fan of the extremely popular, best selling Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell album. So I ordered the two follow-ups, Meat Loaf's Dead Ringer and Jim Steinman's Bad For Good, both from 1981. I know Dead Ringer quite well (I also have it on vinyl - not much good as record player is broken!) but must admit that I have never heard Bad For Good.

My understanding is that the Jim Steinman album was meant to be an official Bat Out Of Hell sequel but Steinman lost patience waiting for Meat Loaf's voice to recover from too much touring, and decided that he would simply sing it himself. Interestingly, some of that album's tracks were then covered by Meat Loaf on his subsequent albums.

I'm really looking forward to both cds arriving. All of the songs on both albums are written by Jim Steinman.

If you like the overblown pomposity of Jim Steinman, I recommend his 1989 'Pandora's Box' project.

It's very similar to the 'Bad For Good' and 'Bat' albums inasmuch as it's a mixture of Wagnerian pomposity, excessive ballads and spoken monologues, but with an all-female cast including Elaine Caswell, Ellen Foley, Gina Taylor and Deliria Wilde. A number of the songs included were later recorded by Meatloaf for the albums 'Welcome To The Neighbourhood' and Bats 2 & 3

As a teenager, I recall reading a UK rock magazine interview with Steinman where he was promoting his Pandora's Box project. He (not very complimentary) briefly talked about a desperate Meat Loaf going so far as to visit a witch doctor in an attempt to fix his voice. Unsurprisingly it didn't work!
