Basically it costs money to restore a film to look it's best. 88 Films don't want to pay to do it themselves so get punters to pay for the restoration and offer incentives for them to do it.

I know that sounds cynical how i explained it but it's not a lie. Other companies do it. Arrow for example with the WB box set. It gets the product out there and guarantees it doesn't make a loss for the restoring / releasing company.

I suppose you could equally say "88 Films can't pay to do it themselves, so get punters to pay for the restoration and offer incentives for them to do it".

I would think its perhaps too much of a gamble and a bit of both really.

I'm only speculating none of what i'm saying is fact. However when only 15 people pre-ordered the Bloodsucking Freaks dvd they pulled it from the release schedules. So i would think it's a safety first way of releasing a film.

Everyone does it. Rob Thomas did it with the Veronica Mars movie, as Warner didn't want to spend all the money themselves on something they didn't think would get them a return on their investment. I have no problem with 88 going this route with trying to get funds to restore Zombi Holocaust. Tbh, I don't know if they'd get 7 1/2 grand in sales from this, so I think fans helping, and knowing they were a part of something like this, is a great idea.

I would think it unlikely that it will be "exclusive" in the sense that they won't reuse the master to release the film again later down the line. It may be that the release is only available to funders for a particular period of time and I guess the packaging may well be exclusive for the initial release.

I read the campaign page. It comes with exclusive packaging.
