If you look at Nu-Who as a whole it's the scary dark episodes or the episodes that evoke pensive reflection and a sense of loss that are the most successful. These wacky ones are generally treated with derision. This episode in particular seems like a missed opportunity - I remember the comic strip being pretty wacky but it also had that hard edge of 2000A.D. type violence and RTD seems to have toned that edge down, probably because it was out of kilter with his feelgood love-in finale. RTD promises the next episode is very scary so I'll tune in for that one and hopefully the tone changes and we get back to some proper DR. WHO |
