Prisoner Cell Block H, aside from being well known for it’s bent screws, sassy inmates and routine Laundry Room violence is equally famed for having one of Soap’s most popular theme tunes, the evergreen ‘On the Inside’. but what’s the story behind this eternal anthem of feminine solitude, prison heartache and floral gift giving?

The song was written by Allan Caswell, born in 1952, an award winning Austrialian singer songwriter, who emigrated with his family from England in 1966. As well as writing the theme to Prisoner, he has won numerous Australian Country Music accolades and, in an interesting, related twist, now spends his time working in juvenile dentention centres, using music to help troubled kids get back on track.

The songs distinctive vocals are provided by Lynne Hamilton, an English performer with a colourful and varied career that goes back to the British Beat Boom of the 1960s, when she was a contemporary of and featured on the same bills as The Who, Freddy and the Dreamers and The Animals. Sharing a label with The Beatles, she counted Paul McCartney as a personal friend and toured the UK and Europe with some chart success until a move down under in 1971 saw a radical career change as operating a car hire firm and running a number of resturants. Lasting fame finally came with the recording of On The Inside in 1979. An Australian No.1, it shifted 80000 copies on release.

Ten years later, the song became a hit all over again when, following the broadcast of Prisoner in the UK, the song flew up the British charts, hitting the No.3 spot. Lynne appeared on numerous UK TV shows, including Top of the Pops, after a hunt for the ‘lost’ singer tracked her down at her home in Queensland.

Hamilton, now a born again Evangelist Preacher, continues to record Gospel and Praise and Worship music to this day, as well as running a number of successful Christian Ministries.

On The Inside also became a European hit when it was covered in a reggae style by Cypriot singer and 1984 Eurovision song contest entrant Andy Paul.
