A SERBIAN FILM gets more complex the more you think about it. After the initial, overpowering shock of the sex and violence has ebbed, you realise there are other things going on. Take this scene, in which the aging porn star at the heart of the film has a discussion about the movie he’s about to start shooting with his manic director.
The unusual production pays much more than a typical porno shoot and it’s shrouded in a veil of artistic pretension and total secrecy. Who wouldn’t be curious when faced with such a strange set of circumstances? Dimissively, the director bats away his actors questions with a question… “Who cares what a porn films is about?”
Throughout it’s running time, A SERBIAN FILM questions the viewers attitudes to onscreen sex and violence. Who cares what a porn movie is about… or how it was made… or the impact on the performers?
