This Week @ Cult Labs: 18 February 2011

Mmmm… Life-giving caffeine…

Ugh, I’ve been teaching today again and it was a hard slog. So I’m currently drinking some extra-strong coffee and looking forward to this evening when I can finish off my latest knitting project while wearing pyjamas, drinking an extra-large glass of wine and trying not to nod off! My life is so exciting…

On the bright side, there’s plenty to look forward to next week. Arrow Video’s stunning release of Vamp is out on Blu-ray and DVD on Monday. This perfect blend of horror and comedy is a must-have for fans of all-things 80s. You can check out more on the blog or head on over to the official thread to read what other Cult Labs members have to say about it.

But, for now, on with the newsletter!

Sarah@Cult Labs.

BLACK: OUT NOW

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been telling you about French blaxploitation style film, Black. Well, now I can tell you that it is out now on DVD and Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment. Both the film and its soundtrack are getting rave reviews and it may turn out to be my film-of-choice to watch with my glass of red later! For more info and reviews, check out the blog or head on over to the official thread.

PRISONER CELL BLOCK H: THE OFFICIAL UK DVD FORUM

We love a bit of Prisoner Cell Block H at Cult Labs, so much so that we are now the hosts of the official UK DVD forum for the series!

The forum is the place where you can discuss all things Prisoner and is also the place to meet other fans. So, if you know any Prisoner fans who’d like a friendly place on the web to discuss their favourite Aussie prison soap, tell them to register at Cult Labs and then get themselves into the Prisoner forum, which is fun, friendly and ran by fans for fans.

Not only can you chat about all things to do with the series, you can also get involved with its UK DVD release. Right now you can vote on what colour will be used for the forthcoming Vol. 7 (I went for lime green) by heading over here.

Speaking of the DVDs, Vol. 6 is on its way and will be released 21 June 2010. For more info you can check out the blog or head right on over to the official forum!

DAMNED BY DAWN

Coming soon on DVD by Momentum Pictures is Damned By Dawn, a massive crowd-pleaser at 2010′s Film4 FrightFest. The film follows a family battling all manner of supernatural spookery, including a banshee and flying skeletons (!) and is guaranteed to delight horror movie fans with a yearning for the type of inventive and entertaining horror-comedy shenanigans not seen since Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy.

Fangoria gave the film three skulls out of a possible four, while Undead Backbrain describe it as, “a remarkably effective piece of visual spookery, both atmospheric and blood-splattered, with an evocative script, and ghostly FX.” Damned By Dawn will be released on 7 March 2010. For more info check out the blog or the official thread.

BEST OF THE BLOG

Out on DVD on Monday is Stonehenge Apocalypse from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment. The brilliantly titled science-fiction thriller is, as you may have guessed, set around British landmark, Stonehenge. This week, Sam has painstakingly collated a series of links so that you can discover all about Stonehenge, and has incorporated it into one of his excellent blogs!

“In ancient times…
Hundreds of years before the dawn of history
Lived a strange race of people… the Druids

No one knows who they were or what they were doing
But their legacy remains
Hewn into the living rock… Of Stonehenge”

So spake Nigel Tufnel, the visionary genius and guitar god of defining UK metal band Spinal Tap (before being mortally embarassed during the Mandolin solo when the eighteen inch henge descended…) but what is the truth behind Britains most famous ancient ruin?

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY

Why do people always ring when you’re just getting into the flow of things? I had something really witty to write here and now I can’t remember for the life of me what it was. So thank you very much to what was either a silent call centre person or an obscene caller (there were funny noises that could have been a call centre or could have been… something else). It says a lot for how annoying call centres are that I kinda hope it was an obscene caller… But, anyway, while I recover, why don’t I catch you up on what’s caught my eye at the Labs this week?

Bronx Warriors Screening in Preston!

We get on well with the guys at Mondo Euro and The Continental in Preston. Why? Well they like to screen films that Cult Labs members like to watch and their event on 25 February is no exception. They’ve teamed up with Shameless Screen Entertainment to put on a screening of The Bronx Warriors on their 14ft screen. This is a chance to watch this excellent film on the big screen and potentially meet some of your fellow Cult Labbers so for more information, check out this thread, now!

The Twilight Zone Thread – The Original Series

I’ve only seen a few Twilight Zone episodes from the original series and it was so long ago that I can’t even remember which ones they were, but many of you have better memories than me and are showing yourselves to be massive fans! TGGPodcast has even posted a photo of his collection which is impressive to say the least! So, are you a TZ original series fan? If so, get yourself on this thread now! If not, perhaps it’s because you would prefer…

The Twilight Zone – The Eighties Series

Whether you think it’s in the same league as the original series or not, the eighties Twilight Zone still had its moments and featured work from some great horror directors including William Friedkin and Wes Craven. In fact, Gojirosan goes so far as to say, “The Wes Craven episodes are some of his best work, IMO.” What do you think? Have a particular favourite amongst this slice of eighties greatness? Get on over to the thread to share.

Fantasy Shameless Artwork

Fantasy Shameless art has always been popular on Cult Labs, but in the last week this thread’s seen a boost with some amazing fan-art from Dissolvedpaul who has made some great contributions. His artwork for The Bird With The Crystal Plumage almost makes me gutted that Shameless aren’t releasing this (check it out, Arrow!) and his Shameless version of John Russo’s Midnight is also well worth a peek. So, to check out Paul’s artwork, or to add your own, head on over to this thread!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Oh my god,we’ll be turning into Barbie or Pixie at this rate or worse still…. Joyce!” – evil is not sure about the amount of people who want Prisoner Vol. 7 in pink…

KYLE’S COMP CORNER

This week, Kyle is giving away the awesomely titled Alien Vs. Ninja. I actually already have a copy of this (and can’t wait to watch it) so for once I’m not grumpy that I can’t enter the comp! To enter, you need to head on over to the Comp Corner now! Good luck…

MODS & ROCKERS

Just a few notes from your friendly neighbourhood Mods this week:

  • Although many of the films discussed on Cult Labs are extreme in nature, we do draw a line at the discussion of pornography, even if it is horror porn. There are plenty of places on the internet where this kind of thing can be discussed but Cult Labs is not one of them so please refrain from discussion of pornographic material on the forums.
  • At Cult Labs, we encourage trading, but accept no reponsibility for any private transactions conducted between its members. However, if you have had an unpleasant, or a suspected fraudulent trading experience please feel free to PM one of the moderating team in strict confidence.

The forum rules can be found here. If any of the mods (forum, technical, competitions, etc.) want me to include anything in this section next week then just let me know!

WELCOME NEWBIES!
