If the original version was available on the bd, fans wouldn't care much about the tinkering. Even Hammer's own Marcus Hearn agrees. Quote from the Cathode Ray Tube blog review:

Putting the ethics of whether you should go back and revise or enhance films to one side, I believe not including the original, restored version without the enhanced effects on this release is an error of judgement. Both versions should have been on the disc to satisfy fans, old and new, and to quote Marcus Hearn, fulfill 'the efforts that have been made to present [these films] as most British audience-members would have originally seen them.' Clearly they never saw the film with CGI clouds, smoke and water and I'm sure many of us would like the choice to see the restored film as such.

Anyone else recall seeing this on a double bill on the Beeb back in the day?

I wonder in these days of the WWW,you could find out exactly what these double bills were.

I recall seeing many a Hammer film on the BBC.

Most of the Hammer films that I've seen were courtesy of the BBC in the early 90's and this chap

Can't help you there then, I was only around for 5 months of the 70's and spent most of the early 80's watching kids cartoons, I wasn't initiated into the Horror Film Club until 1989 at the ripe old age of 10!

I've actually tried searching for them online. I'd have thought someone would have listed them by now but never found them.

I think it's because of these old double bills that the likes of Hammer. Amicus, Tyburn, Val Lewton etc are still my favourite horrors.

They even turned Zoltan Hound of Dracula into a good film.

Somebody sent me this list years ago, not sure where they got the listings from, but it is accurate, I know that much. That final film, Theatre of Blood, was a defining moment in my horror education and I've loved it to bits ever since.

But anyway, there you have it
