I came down with a little bit of a cold today, and I've pretty much just been sleeping all day. I probably won't get this started today, but I definitely will get it going tomorrow if I don't get it going tonight.

COUNTDOWN HAS STARTED!

Make sure we use this thread for discussion though, at least until the countdown finishes up. I'll try to finish it within a couple days, but I'll still try to keep it suspenseful.

How many lists were contributed in the end Justin?

I feel we may not get a great representation of '80s horror with few lists... although it's nice to see Vamp make the list!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the results, as they are posted over the next couple of days.

We got 12 lists in. It's not a giant number, but it worked out fine. The heavy hitters all show up, and some that I'd previously never heard of show up too.

EDIT: We got enough lists in that each film that made it had at least two votes.

Sadly, some of us were not born in the 80's

*cough*!

Just that, for those of us born after the 80's *cough*, we didn't get to see the film on their first release, and therefore, we cannot gauge just how scary these movies originally were

For example...I personally don't think that 'Psycho' is "the scariest film ever made", because by the time I saw it, it has been usurped by the many, MANY rip-offs I had already seen!

You've used this argument before. Sorry, but it doesn't wash with me.

I think Casablanca is the finest film of all time. Yet never saw it in the forties and watched countless rip offs like Barb Wire before i saw the original.

True class is there for all time, no matter when in your life you see it.

The Haunting is my favourite ghost story. Even though i've seen it many times now, it can still send shivers down my spine whilst watching it in the right enviroment. Its certainly not diminished by the millions of turgid spooky horrors in the years since.

But how many of those did you see in the 'proper environment' - ie, a darkened cinema?

Films lose something on television, video, DVD, blu-ray, even when they are watched late at night, with all the curtains closed and in pitch darkness

For me, the best films I have ever seen (i.e at the cinema, on first release) were 'Se7en' and 'Scream'. Both of them made me feel simultaneously dirty (I wanted to get home to have a shower) and elated (I wanted to get another ticket, and go and watch them again straight away)!
