An early scene in Zombie Flesh Eaters which I always look forward to is the bit of shop talk between the two coronors...it always cracks me up:

Coroner1: "Have you already examined him?"
Coroner2: "Yeah, I made one or two notes. In my opinion, the death of the poor bastard was caused by massive hemorrhaging."

and then later in the scene:

Coroner1: Pass me the scalpel
- Examines it and comments in disgust - I wouldn't be able to cut my way through tissue paper with this
Coroner2 shakes his head thinking, What a ballbusting pr*ck...

Watching ZFE with a cinema full of people was quite an experience. I'd actually never thought of it as a funny film, but everyone, including myself, was laughing out loud at the dialogue

I think your experience of something like that does change if you're with an audience. I had a similar experience when I saw a screening of The Beyond.

Yep, but I had a disastrous experience at the re-release of The Exorcist when the hipster kids laughed and howled thru the movie. I was bringing my brother along to see this legendary film (banned in Ireland along with the UK) and I was f*cking mortified. I never wanted to kill a bunch of people so bad...

My first experience of seeing this was at the cinema during it's 1999 re-release and my mates were all sat laughing and taking the piss, I went mental at them for it because they ruined it for me! In fact the cinema was full of laughter, you'd have thought it was a comedy on the screen and not one of the finest Horror films ever made, I was so mad I almost started handing out headbutts

I love it... I remember a 90's issue of Empire had an article about hecklers at the cinema. So Empire sent along their man to test the patience of some audiences, booing and acting the fool throughout the screenings. Mostly, it was tolerated, but eventually at a screening of some art film, some guy came over and handed the Empire guy his ass, sent the dude running...

The Exorcist is a great film, but to be honest, I never found it to be all that scary, not even when I saw it for the first time at age 12.
The demon is so over the top when it comes to the cursing, puking, spinning head, etc, that at times it actually turnes into a black comedy for me.
Maybe it´s more scary for religious people?
Still, I do think it´s a great classic.

Maybe, maybe...I saw the film when I was 14, 15 on a well worn Warners rental tape and I thought it was the most intense experience of my life. I had to stop the film in the middle and take a breather... I still think it's an extraordinary film.

It's the freaky subliminal Pazuzu shots that still give me the creeps. But yeah some of the possession bits verge on black comedy ("What an excellent day for an exorcism") . . .

The first time I saw the Exorcist after it's re-release alot of my friends were laughing when we watched it. For me, though...It actually gets more unsettling the older I get. I re-watched earlier in the year and it seemed to be creepier than when I first watched it.

I remember watching TCM in 1999 at the cinema when it was finally un-banned. No ****er was laughing at that bad boy. The sound design of that film, in the 'you can't pause it and go make a brew' environment of the cinema, really got to people in the audience. A couple of people walked out. After 25 years the film was still a shock for some. Awesome. One of the best experiences I've had at the movies.
