On a more serious note than my last, this feeds into the fall out from Operation Spanner in which a group of consenting men were convicted and sentenced to prison for having consensual extreme S&M parties and filming themselves. Setting aside the underlying homophobia of the case( similar heterosexual cases have resulted in no convictions), the powers that be wish to control your sex life not only your viewing habits.

In a perfect world we would all self censor but unfortunately so long as a few individuals can influence media companies or newspapers then what one person sees as art another will see as obscene or dangerous. Censorship in the U.S and Britain started when a small group decided that they were offended more by what others were seeing and rarely by what they were seeing themselves. In 30's Hollywood it was the Catholic League of Decency that gave rise to the Hays office and its Production Code in 80's Britain it was Mary Whitehouse and her organisation that lobbied MP Graham Bright which led to the Video Nasty era and the police raiding video shops up and down the country deciding what was dangerous for us and what wasn't (usually by title and artwork alone 'The Big Red One for instance'). The problem is that people tend to jump on the bandwagon, (Daily Mail), the more sensational the claim of danger is. Pretty Baby (1978) contains child nudity but the cinamatography is gorgeous to look at but because Brooke Shields runs around in her birthday suit there are others who would call it obscene. A fair few of those video nasties are now available uncut but it only takes a handful of people to decided whats suitable for viewing for the rest of us and what isn't. So in answer to your question as to how and who draws the line you draw your own line so long as it dosen't harm anyone else.

JoshuaKaitlyn, I would have pressed "like" twice if I could have. Really good answer, mate.

MTDS, I hadn't heard of The Spanner Case before but WTF???? Seriously, I cannot get my head around this. According to UK law, they ruled that consent was not a valid legal defence for wounding and actual bodily harm in the UK.
How utterly ignorant, uninformed and stupid are they? It beggars belief, not only on the absurdity of the statement itself but the fact that it seems only enforceable on the homosexual corner of society as heterosexual acts of the same exact nature were dismissed. Isn't that called bigotry?
Also does that mean that if I get a tattoo or a piercing on my body, or decide to be suspended by hooks in my back, even though I have given my permission to have this done to me, the person doing said deed can be arrested and charged?
Answering my own question here..YES!! How stupid is that?

Josh hit the nail on the head when he said ...."people decided they were offended..." Herein lies the whole issue of censorship. People who unfortunately have been brought up in this PC-Health and Safety-can't say this, can't do that Big Brother country are so willing to be "offended" to prove to the rest of us just how evolved and mature they are, when all it actually does is show just how brainwashed and controlled they really are. "I feel offended by the word blackboard!!" WHY?? It's black. It's a board. It's been called that since chalk was used to write. How is it derogatory? How does that offend? It doesn't, it is just an attention whore trying to show that they are so much better than the rest of us, "and look, I'm a Caucasian fighting for equality." No mate, just a dick.

Dem...This might sound like I'm having a go at you but I'm not. Have you seen the full uncut version then, so you know what you're commenting on...or are you just Mary Whitehouse-ing here?

No i haven't seen the full uncut version.

It's a (current) taboo subject that get's everyone in authority positions up in arms so i was saying that any such acts on film would be cut. ie - what were they thinking, of course it's going to be cut?

You must be bored re-reading week old posts.

Welcome to my life!!! I was walking home from work thinking no one was going to comment on the porn bit I wrote as either no one watches it at all, ever, ever, or the subject was a bit too adult...Then your comment popped into my mind and I just thought, hang on, how would you know....
Devil's advocate....had to ask. You never know, you might have got all shirty and we could have had a bit of debate and a laugh....
Apparently not....

You could use that very same argument for any death in the movies. Because someone got shot in London we should ban all films with guns in it so that it can't happen again? This is no law, this - again - is judgement by the examiners and as such can be interpreted different ways by different examiners.

Can anyone explain why a suicide technique is fine to be shown uncut on the telly but cut for DVD release in the same country using the same "laws"??
Sky / TV etc have their own rules and guidelines different from bbc guidlines and can even show bits on TV that have been cut by the BBC ( within limits ) when a show off TV goes onto DVD etc it gets looked at again before distribution hence why sometimes clips get cut ..even tho it does come across as stupid and pointless.

I'm the wrong member for this subject. Gothic horror and British films is where i'm at. Besides debating this with you would be like debating The Exorcist with Mark Kermode, i'd be totally out of my depth.

Flattery will get you everywhere, you Gothic hunk of manhood, you!!
I loves a good debate but I wouldn't want to deliberately upset someone. See if my next bit of censorship baiting (This weekend...) gets more replies than my last one handed effort...
