I do also agree that the BBFC is far better then it was in the Ferman days, all they need to do now is to introduce unrated classifications on dvds.
Maybe we should have a mass letter writing campaign to Soho Square!

For an unrated classification to be introduced here, Parliament would have to agree to scrap the VRA and the OPA. Can't see it happening.

Roger Corman I know. James Ferman I know. But who's Roger Ferman? An unholy melding of the two?

True, I doubt we will ever see unrated movies in the UK but then again I have no problem importing. Only issue is that it gets expensive

It was Ferman who rejected Late Night Trains for cinema and cut Killer Nun for video, along with most of the now Shameless titles. Baba Yaga was cut by Stephen Murphy who was even more erratic as a censor.

Ferman also booted New York Ripper out of the country (under escort) and it was never again submitted during his lifetime. Were he censor today (god help us) he'd probably have banned it again.

I agree with you vincenzo. In fact I actually sent an email to the BBFC regarding this matter a few months ago. My observation was that whilst I fully support the humane treatment of animals in terms of filmmaking, it seems rather excessive to cut old westerns for example, featuring horsefalls and trips, in the present when they were never cut before. There seems to be an absence of common sense in this regard.

To their credit they replied but of course their policy will not change as far as I can see.

Seeing as the BBFC are required by law to cut animal cruelty they cannot refuse to cut present day cruelty simply because the scenes got through intact in the past. I would like to believe they won't make any more blunders today as they did in the past ie passing scenes they should have cut but we will just have to see.

This makes it highly unlikely that Inferno will pass intact. If by some miracle it does then it would be interesting to find out how they arrived at the conclusion. Especially regarding the cat/mouse scene.

it seems my sleep deprived state created a monster! Things would be very different at the BBFC if Roger Corman was in charge -- now there's a thought...

Just going back a couple of pages, I think there is something in the act about it being okay to film an animal being killed if it's not for the purposes of entertainment and was not set up for the film, as in the case of the water buffalo in Apocalypse Now, and taking an animal and mistreating or killing it is part of the filming process, as in The Isle or Cannibal Holocaust.

It is a really weird situation but the BBFC are bound by the Act and, unless that changes, they will continue to cut scenes that breach it.

They will also allow a quick kill. The killing of the chicken in Pink Flamingos (crushed during a sex scene) was hardly quick and was also set up for the purpose of entertainment, which made me even more surprised that the BBFC eventually passed it.
