A blu-ray of Ralph Bakshi's 1978 Lord of the Rings cartoon has just been delivered. He wanted to call it Lord of the Rings part 1 which would have prevented disappointment amongst many viewers. I think that I may even prefer it to the expensive Peter Jackson adaption, amazing as that was. I haven't seen it for around 10 years but I recall it being more faithful to the source material. For example, here it's Gandalf who works out how to gain entry to the mines of Moria. Mind you, it is a bit annoying that Saruman is sometimes renamed Aruman (supposedly there were concerns that it sounded similar to Sauron). btw After reading that this animated film was quite profitable, I really can't understand why the planned second half didn't get made? |

The Wire is the greatest drama ever to air on television in my opinion...if you get to the third or fourth episode. It’s quite disorientating at the beginning and it rewards effort, you need to concentrate and it’s not a show you can casually watch. One of the taglines is ‘all the pieces matter’ and it’s absolutely spot on, something that happens in episode five can have repercussions thirty episodes later. I envy anyone watching it for the first time. An absolute masterpiece and I’m not sure we’ll see anything like it again. The ambition, intelligence and scope is unparalleled. 6 Attachment(s) Some of this is stuff from Fopp, or the Arrow Store from the end of August! The rest are mostly new or recent releases, from September and October. Was excited to get October's Indicator box sets this morning, gorgeous packages, saving Night Of The Demon for Halloween. Also saving Terrifier for Halloween, loved the original segment in All Hallow's Eve. Never seen Return Of The Living Dead Part 2, weirdly, I've seen the original and 3 loads of times. Excited to see Michael Winner's Scream For Help, I've heard interesting things about that. I enjoyed Solo, but it felt almost like an obligation to pick it up, they made the right decision to slow down the Star Wars releases. |

A UK Casshern dvd arrived. I was amused by the quote on the front: "Better than both Matrix sequels put together..." Damning with faint praise is the phrase that springs to mind. :) |

Picked up a blu-ray of George Romero's The Crazies from my town's HMV (I'm lucky enough to have a HMV just 20 minutes walk from my flat). 8.99 is a very fair price, will probably watch on Monday. This is the first Arrow release where I've kept the new artwork, normally I reverse the sleeve but this time I wasn't very taken with the alternative. btw A Japanese bd of Martin is coming later this year, I'm hoping that it will also play on region b equipment. |
4 Attachment(s) Yet another day of "not buying anything today" ended with... the Red BD pair were £3.50 total from CEX and the Lego BD were £4 each from charity shop, |

When i thought about it, i still haven't watched the US version on the dvd i've had for years, so it's doubtful i'd ever watch any of the shorter cuts on the blu-ray. |
