The Keep is flawed, but it's very watchable and the soundtrack is excellent.

Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack for Thief and it is a wonderful composition.

FAVOURITE COMPOSERS
  1. Ennio Morricone (Once Upon a Time in the West)
  2. Bernard Herrmann (Vertigo)
  3. Elmer Bernstein (The Age of Innocence)
  4. Danny Elfman (Edward Scissorhands)
  5. John Carpenter (Prince of Darkness)
  6. Fabio Frizzi (The Beyond)
  7. Charlie Chaplin (City Lights)
  8. Goblin/Claudio Simonetti (Tenebrae)
  9. Angelo Badalamenti (Mulholland Drive)
  10. Max Steiner (The Searchers)

Putting these in order was really difficult, as was identifying my favourite of their scores, indicated in parentheses after their name. I've made one change to the list I posted on Monday with Charlie Chaplin replacing Clint Mansell; a couple of others have changed places.

There were lots of varied and interesting lists over the last week causing me to revisit some great soundtracks and thinking a lot about why I like certain composers, so thanks everyone for your input.

My thought for this week was spurred on by a discussion with Demdike following a comment I made about his review of The Last Picture Show and what is considered a 'directorial debut'. I had a look at several sites and lists of what great films have been produced by people directing a feature film for the first time so, concentrating on feature length films and ignoring short films someone may have made previously, could you give your top 10 favourite directorial debuts.

DIRECTORIAL DEBUTS

Top 10 Directorial Debuts.

Dennis Hopper – Easy Rider (1969)
Quentin Tarantino – Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Bruce Robinson – Withnail and I (1986)
Simon West – Con Air (1997)
Michael Dougherty – Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Kevin Smith - Clerks (1994)*
Rob Zombie – House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
John Huston – The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Sidney Lumet – 12 Angry Men (1957)
Mario Bava – Black Sunday (1960)

I would have gone with Christian Nyby and The Thing from Another World but you only have to watch the film to know it was Howard Hawks who directed most of it.

As for the list itself. Personal preferences apply over great film making.
