Top Ten Adult Animations Fantastic Planet images (23).jpeg Belladonna Of Sadness images (24).jpeg Svankmajer's Alice Alice 2 (1).jpg Grave Of The Fireflies Plague Dogs When The Wind Blows Akira 60916.jpg Fire And Ice Princess Mononoke 25015945_402419363536294_7074844441218908160_n.jpg Perfect Blue perfect-blue-02-g.jpg I would say all of these films are adult in tone, a lot have PG ratings but that is due to animation being thought of as kids stuff. I almost put in "Watership Down" as it is pretty traumatic stuff for many kids who grew up in that era. Also i tried to focus on feature length films. If i was including short features then top of my pile would be the Brothers Quay- Street of crocodiles maxresdefault (10).jpg Truly nightmarish. Also a shout out to David Lynch's "The Grandmother" that surges from Live action into animation and is a nightmarish delicacy.

I think animation is not recognised enough in it's ability to create unique worlds. Svankmajer's "Alice" and his shorts in general are really unsettling as are The Brothers Quay. Also "Fantastic planet" and "Belladonna of Sadness" are startling pieces of work. I've seen other shorts on the internet that are really twisted and disturbing but i can't recall what they are. Sometimes they are a lot more unsettling because the animation process creates a distorted reality and the result taps in to the surreal and unconscious world of dreams.

I bought Paprika at the same time as Tekkonkinkreet 10 years ago and probably haven't seen them since then! I thought they were both excellent films, but somehow haven't put them into regular circulation.

Ooooh. Well it is Satoshi Kon I bought the BD first chance I got. The comm is priceless as 3 very polite Japanese gentlemen discuss this very strange film. Christopher Nolan obviously thought so as Inception is a paaaale imitation of it. IMO Recommended. Highly.

On topic (more or less), I watched the Captain Underpants movie today and it's absolutely hilarious. I had avoided it because I thought it was something only for children, but it's not and something which should have cross generational appeal.
