I didn't dislike it, don't get me wrong. I liked the 'Young Superman as a horror film' concept and was surprised at how violent and gory it is. I also liked how it ended as it fit the tone and content of the film.

I was less convinced by the title and the slightly chaotic storytelling – it was a film where I was never sure on the interpersonal relationships and some characters' motivations. The whole thing felt a bit half told and underdeveloped, like a film which needs a sequel and is unlikely to get one.

Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson

1 Attachment(s)
What ever you may think of Al Adamson, and let's be honest most people don't think a hell of alot of his movies,he certainly had an interesting if a little cut short life.. Although it seems that to be a low budget film director, especially if you are from the USA,they tend to be a little eccentric to say the least..And Al Adamson was certainly no different on that score. To most people an Al Adamson movie is like some sort of test of endurance,an to be fair even his fans would find some of his movies a test of there patience..But amazingly this documentary on his life and film making career, and his unfortunate murder,is not only a great documentary but it may even make you appreciate some of Al's work....(although I won't hold my breath)... Anybody familiar with Adamson film's, knows how diverse his films were, and he worked with some amazing actor's,and a couple of his director of photography went on to do major films...It has to be said that the story of his life is a lot more entertaining than many of his movies, but it does give you a new appreciation of his career..

Justin101 1st June 2020 07:20 PM

I've got Blood & Flesh to watch and I'm really excited. I've never seen an Al Adamson film, but if I had the £200 to spare I'd be buying that box set right away!

Riot

Another P/M Entertainment Group Actioner in which Gary Daniels is sent into a no man's land when his ex-fiancé is kidnapped during a riot. He assisted by Sugar Ray Lenard. Not a bad little movie but drags on at the end when a new bunch of villains turn up negating the original ones.

G*st*p*o's Last O**y

Apologies regarding the self-censorship. I wasn't sure on the rules regarding offensive film titles.

One of the more notorious Video Nasties in which show the torture and degradation of female prisoners in a Nazi Concentration Camp. Told as a flashback as a former prisoner seduces her main captor, we find out why. It has disturbing scenes to say the least but it's more stylish than the other films in it's genre. Like how Cannibal Holocaust is seen as the best in the Cannibal genre.

Very unlikely it's going to get passed uncut by The BBFC, it's this film along with Snuff that are the more famous Video Nasties yet to receive a UK release (Even though I believe that Snuff was going to be released but didn't)

Gone In 60 Seconds

Nicholas Cage is the car thief bought back into retirement in order to save his brother who failed to steal enough cars. For me it's another of one of those great switch of your brain, relax and enjoy kind of films.

Can't believe it's 20 years old. Seriously where did all the time go.

Magnum Force (1973)

A classic seventies crime thriller starring Clint Eastwood as the cool as f*ck Harry Callahan.

A good story, a classy Lalo Schifrin acid jazz score, unflinching violence, superb San Francisco location filming and Eastwood as laconic as ever.

Magnum Force could, especially with it's plotline, easily be reviewed with just two simple words - Maniac Cop!

Happy 90th Clint. Hope you had a good one.

Hercules. 1983.

King Minos and sorceress Adriana plan to conquer the world while Hercules plans to rescue Cassiopeia with the help of a sorceress Circe.

This was not the best movie to feature the Greek mythological figure, but wasn't that bad to not enjoy it, another mish mash film by the Cannon studio starring Lou Ferringo as Hercules orphaned as a baby and grew up to be a strong man. There is some visual effects that seem outdated and cheaply done, there is some assortment of known actors in this that all seem to be dubbed over. Good for the laughs.

SS Experiment Camp

Another of the famous Video Nasties where female prisoners are subjected to numerous (mostly) sexual experiments. Not really a good film but a certain transplant scene isn't something you see everyday lol.

Whiplash

Miles Teller is the Jazz Band Student is selected by J.K. Simmons's to join his band. Once there he and his bandmates are pushed to the limits by their very very demanding Conductor. Simmons is absolutely incredible in this movie, his verbal tirades towards his students are something to behold and the look of fear and complete terror shown by the students are very convincing indeed. Simmons fully deserved all his awards he won for this role.

I honestly don't know if he's scarier in this or The TV show Oz.

Space Cowboys (2000)

Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys comes with one very familiar scenario - The men on a mission movie. However this is slightly different and unique (for it's time of release) in that the men going on said mission are all old timers and the mission in question is in space.

It's great seeing Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland sparring off one another as ageing former astronauts brought back into the NASA fold to retrieve a satellite before it crashes into the Earth. Naturally there's a twist and things don't go quite to plan.

Certainly Space Cowboys is a bit cliche but it uses cliche's that work rather than making the viewer cringe and melancholy, whilst in the story, is handled nicely by Eastwood the director, thus not making the movie either too jingoistic nor overly sentimental.

The film has some excellent special effects work, making you believe it was genuinely shot in space orbiting the Earth, but when you get actors of this class together along with great supports from the likes of Marcia Gay Harden, James Cromwell and William Devane there's as much to appreciate from the acting as there is from the story itself and that's what made it really entertaining from my point of view.

The Adventures of Hercules II. 1985.

Hercules goes in search of Zeus's seven lighting bolts after they were stolen.

Lou Ferringo returns as the Greek legend Hercules, this one seems well OTT with the story line that seems to be all over the place and some scenes not making sense that it was filmed in one go and badly edited together. There is more visual effects added that it looks like more money was put into this film than the first and the last 15 minutes look to be part copied from the first and imitated King Kong, so bad its good.

THE RETURN OF COUNT YORGA (1971)

Count Yorga returns with his henchman Brudda to cause mayhem at an orphanage.
Some really great scenes here mostly involving the vampire women that Yorga keeps around. The scene where the women rise out of the ground is great and the best scene is when the women smash in to the house and attack those inside. The screams from the victims make this scene pretty intense.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Way back in 1998 before this classic Coen brothers film had it's release i was fortunate enough to attend a test screening.

When it came to commenting on how the film could be improved i asked for Donny (Steve Buscemi) not to be killed off as it was unnecessary and he'd been given a hard time throughout the movie by Walter (John Goodman), constantly being told to "Shut the f*ck up" when he wasn't even saying anything. It tasted a bit sour when the put upon little guy ended up dead.

Did the Coen's listen to me, did they take in my words about Donny?

Did they f*ck!

Casino Royale (2006) ★★★★

From the opening sequence and Chris Cornell's superb theme song to its final scene, I watched this with almost as much enjoyment and interest as when I watched it in the cinema 14 years ago.

Casino Royale is a tightly written and expertly directed spy thriller which benefits from the lack of an über villain – Le Chiffre is only a main player in the second act but is believable and played with real menace by Mads Mikkelsen – and the network of criminals extends to the immediate sequel. After the high-octane first act, the entire middle section centres on a game of poker which, to the spectator, isn't the most exciting of activities, yet it is a tense and gripping game, aided in no small part by the off-table events.

This is almost a Bond film for people who don’t generally like Bond films – I suspect it was subconsciously influenced by the Bourne movies which arguably breathed life into the dying espionage action genre – and is perhaps the reason I like it so much.

My only gripe regarding this is the final third is too long and drawn out. From the breathless excitement of the poker game (i can't believe i just typed that) we end up with what can only be described as an elongated romance. I can understand why it's there - to give the finale and betrayal more of an impact but OHMSS did the romantic angle so much better than it's done here.

Other than that it's top five in my Bond list and far superior to any of the films that followed.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 3rd June 2020 04:38 PM

Quantum of Solace (2008) ★★★

Although this has an excellent pre-credit sequence, the theme song is, putting it bluntly, godawful.

I really like the relationship between Daniel Craig's Bond and Camille (Olga Kurylenko), the film's main failing is in its villain, an ecological businessman linked to organised crime. I normally like Mathieu Amalric as an actor, but his character is so underdeveloped and dull that it's very difficult to emotionally and cognitively engaging in MI6's – and Bond's – pursuit of him.

It's a film with some really good action sequences, a fine score, and top performances from the entire cast. However, like the title, the plot is borderline incomprehensible and it's not a film which is easy to like.

I agree with everything you said here – OHMSS is my favourite and, in my opinion, the best Bond film – except I think Skyfall is the best of the Daniel Craig Bond films so far.

Skyfall (2012) ★★★★½

This might be the best Bond movie, though I'm not sure whether I am here ready to remove On Her Majesty's Secret Service from the top spot yet.

With this film, Sam Mendes shows he's more than an arthouse director, that someone capable of perfectly marrying drama and action with some highly enjoyable and impressive action set pieces

It's also a film where Daniel Craig seems completely at ease as James Bond, moreso than in Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace, and his interactions with Javier Bardem's Silva show a wry humour masking a menace which is always lurking just beneath the surface. I think Bardem is terrific in this, playing a character with real depth, cunning and thread mixed with playfulness. It's a film which uses nostalgia to good effect to bring the past and present together in a film which is more fun than the previous two Bond films.

As the action moves around and the story develops to reveal more of James Bond's past, the film really holds your attention. The present is just as interesting because of characters like Naomie Harris's Moneypenny Ralph Fiennes ' Mallory, and Ben Wishaw's Q, all great additions to the MI6 team.

Once we reach the titular location for the final act, the film takes a more melancholic turn making it, and Bond, more emotionally engaging and interesting.

This was your typical action/comedy from Hong Kong from Sammo Hung (starred and Directed) along with Yuen Biao and Jackie Chan who seem at odds with each other. The fight scenes are always great to watch and Jackie doing his own stunts with a ceiling fan in this one, Benny Urquidez has a small role towards the end with his style of fighting. Sadly this was the last film to appear Sammo, Yuen and Jackie together and very underated movie that was given a decent release..Bring out Project A and Wheels on Meals someone. Recommended.

THE POLICE ARE BLUNDERING IN THE DARK
A number of fashion models are being murdered and all are linked to a wheelchair bound photographer, in this rarely seen Giallo.
The murders are sufficiently gory, there is plenty of disrobing from the cast, but like a lot of ‘lesser’ Gialli, this one drags in the middle ( including a dinner table scene that seems to go on for about a week ).
However it kicks back into gear towards the finale in true bonkers mode, when we discover said photographer ( who looks like a cross between Bob Dylan and Salvador Dali ) has invented a machine that can photograph people’s’ thoughts (!)
Obviously not up there with the classics, but great to a Giallo I’d never seen before - part of Vinegar Syndrome’s wonderful Forgotton Gialli Blu-ray set.

MACABRE
Lambert Bava’s first directed movie, this charts the descent into madness by a woman who has recently been released from psychiatric care, following the death of her lover in a car crash in which she was the passenger.
Her original cheating on her husband at the expense of her children comes into focus early on, when her daughter drowns her younger brother in the bath and making out it was an accident ( this was the reason for her returning in haste in the car that led to the accident in the first place).
Bernice Stegers gives a terrific central performance, mirrored by an equally impressive one from Veronica Zinny as her increasingly dangerous daughter.
It’s a slow moving film, but a fascinating one. 88Films Italian Collection have done a terrific job on this Blu Ray - it’s never looked better.

Take The Lead & The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)

2 Attachment(s)
Take The Lead

True story starring Antonio Banderas as a Ballroom Dancer Instructor who volunteers to teach Ballroom Dancing to an inner city school's detention group. It has the usual cliché of the teens not taking to it originally but finally accept it but I found it to be a hidden gem.

The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)

A Prison Governor uses sadistic methods to keep his prisoners in line but nothing seems to work so he gets the idea to recreate The Human Centipede as a last resort.

The stars from the first 2 movies join up in different roles. This is absolutely crazy. Dieter Laser plays his role as a psychotic Texas Prison Governor with a seemingly deranged glee with Laurence R. Harvey playing his Assistant. There are also roles for Bree Olson and Eric Roberts.

This is not a film for everybody but I found this to be really enjoyable, there are some inventive torture techniques (Water Boarding with boiling water) and a self depreciating script making fun of the original films along with a joke of the Adult Film version (Which I believed starred Olson)

On a side note, I attended the UK Premier of this film at The Nottingham Broadway Cinema. Laser was there in attendance along with Tom Six and his Sister Ilona who was a Producer.

Nightmare Maker has Susan Tyrrell as a possessive religious nutter who occasionally kills anyone who gets in the way of her obsession over her nephew Billy... Susan Tyrrell is superb as the nutty aunt, who has a rather unhealthy fixation on Jimmy McNichol as Billy...I thought this was a fun if bonkers Psycho drama that had a great slasher movie ending...

Captain S. Melly takes command of mixed sex experimental air base in 1940.

From some reviews online this seemed to be getting a bashing with it being rubbish and not the usual laughter, yet i found it to be a laugh as the other carry on films. Kenneth Connors takes lead role as Captain S. Melly alongside Windsor Davies. The laughs are short and spaced out but when the jokes come out only thing to do is not hold anything in and even the uncensored version with the "Fokker" joke and the "trousers and that's all" scenes is what makes it remembered to be a carry on film. Joan Sims, Peter Butterworth, Jack Douglas and Julian Holloway do return to the franchise in this.

Friday the 13th Part 2. (1981)

Does it sound bizarre to find a movie like Friday the 13th Part 2 to be comfort viewing?

A movie where a killer wearing an old potato sack on his head savagely murders young people in the woods?

A movie where said masked killer keeps his mother's decapitated head in a candle lit shrine?

A movie in which a young man confined to a wheelchair has his head brutally split open with a machete?

A movie where a good cast of actors are actually given some character development allowing the viewer to care a bit about them meaning their eventual demise is all the more affecting?

Is all this really comfort viewing?

What kind of sick, twisted individual finds comfort in this?

Well, me as a matter of fact, as i'm sure some of you do too.

Night Killer (1990, "Clyde Anderson" ;))

A serial killer stalks a woman.
Don't all slip into a coma. Massively entertaining in that Fragasso fashion, so if you knows the score, line right up, otherwise stick with Arid Aster :pound:
The usual warped logic applies. The detective is a gem of a performance etc. I cannot wait to watch this one again. Recommended.
