Latest batch of films here -

Red Dawn (1984) - Once again another well known 80's film that for whatever reason slipped through the cracks of childhood viewing. For some, it's fine line treading of melodrama and epic Cold War jingoism will leave them apathetic or apoplectic from opinions over the years. Even with that in mind, I found it to be a proficiently made and well paced slice of alternate history cheese; it's wild change in tone throughout I found more charming than jarring. Will probably always remain one of the more divisive 80's action films.

The Horseman (2008) - Simple Australian vigilante film that's miniscule in terms of budget but heavy on downbeat tone and bouts of ultra violence. In terms of plot it's essentially Hardcore meets Dead Man's Shoes stripped to the bone. Entertaining and suitably violent but perhaps a tad unremarkable.

Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990) - So finally made it through to the last of the Psycho series. Shockingly for me at least even in TV film form, the quality of the series has remained certainly more consistent than most horror franchises. Providing both a suitable ending to the story as well as some occassions of great acting chops, particularly from Olivia Hussey (slight bias being my biggest actress crush ) as Norma Bates. While the original will always remain a considered classic and 2 in my eyes being one of the few truly standout sequels, 3 and 4 still provided for me some sound horror goodness.

Happy viewing.

I used to have a poster for that on my bedroom wall when I was a kid, under its UK title of "The Imp". I much prefer the original US title though.

After the 80s poll I picked up 'The Shining' dvd, I thought it was better than when I last saw it, but what's with the 4:3 ratio, surley we can have the 1:66 now we have 16:9 screens? Not too big a whinge as I picked it up for 50p.

The only widescreen version available is, if I'm not mistaken, on the Blu-ray releases. The DVDs have been 'modified to fit your television' – i.e. the days of 4:3 CRTs!

I have the 2008 2 disc edition that says 1:78:1 for its aspect ratio.

Is this also modified?

A couple of grabs.

Edit - Just checked Dvd Compare. The two disc release is widescreen.

Just watched the KIM NEWMAN and STEPHEN JONES commentary track on THE GHOUL, a fun slice of early british schlock. For some odd reason i'm now feeling the strong urge to watch glengarry glen ross!?
