He messed up his own film by creating a "better version". Just my opinion though. This film was completely rebuild and even crucial dialogue was removed.

Can't leave anything alone will have to get the untampered version, really what is that mans problem! Say that I enjoyed but as I never seen it before I really can't compare but if it's like the rest of his tinkering the old version will be far superior, the cgi in this was awful and out of place

Problem is the original version is only available on vhs or laserdisc...actually those do not contain the original prologue either: "In the original release the movie includes a one minute clip from Things to Come before the opening credits."

There are many versions...have a look. * 1971 Original Theatrical Release - approx.81 min * 1976 Italian Cut - approx.81 min * 1978 Restored Cut - approx.86 min * 1978 German TV-Broadcast - approx.86 min * 2004 The George Lucas Director's Cut - approx.88 min Lucas actually fought Warner to get the fully restored 1978 version out (presumably the one found on vhs/laser) after Warner cut his film. "When THX 1138 was originally released in 1971, it was in a hacked apart - 81 minutes long version after the studio Warner Bros had taken the film away from George Lucas and cut 4-5 minutes from it without Lucas' approval, mostly scenes in the "white limbo" and some of the film’s bizarre humor were taken out. According to a furious Lucas in '71, Warner had also changed parts of the films sound design by Walter Murch. This original theatrical release version has never been available on video." I guess this is the version he (rightly) wanted to be seen. So what's this nonsense director's cut then?
