Film4 showed ZULU this afternoon, never thought of it as an afternoon matinée type watch but thoroughly enjoyed it, a real classic.

that scene when he pulls the guy's entrails out and jumps out of the window, reminds me of Itchy & Scratchy from The Simpsons
great film, shame no commentary and making of on extras

Just seen the new Brit horror Panic Button.
Great premise and clever ideas but the 2nd half of the movie tries to be too clever when it explains why the things are happening. Average movie but could have been a brilliant movie with better execution and ending.

Thor with Brannagh commentary. Being a thesp Brannagh has an engaging way of talking and displays an obvious passion for the film and the people he worked with, very informative and witty.

Pusher with commentary from Winding Refn and William Lustig! Amazed to hear Lustig on the commentary and great to hear them chatting about the Prince Charles cinema in London for the first 5 mins. Lustig was in charge of the R1 release of the movie and he and Refn had become mates after Refn asked permission to use excerpts of Maniac and Vigilante in his second film Bleeder. Absolutely fascinating and insightful commentary that left me quite gobsmacked in that Refn's movie career came about serendipitously. Also amusing to hear him say that he'd never do a sequel

The Football Factory commentary with Nick Love and Danny Dyer. Heard this one a few times before. It never fails to crack me up as Dyer is just a complete goon and Love sashays between geeky director and mockney geezer. Can't imagine this would appeal to many people, but I've got a soft spot for Love's films, which I think are really well made. I'd go as far to say he's like a cockney Shane Meadow's in many ways.

I watched The Loved Ones last night.

Extremely good Aussie horror with some nice sfx work and great performances all around.

For someone who has been cynical about the direction modern horror has taken over the last few years, some of the recent crop of films have been surprisingly good.

I Saw the Devil, Insidious, and The Woman spring immediately to mind. Rubber, which I also watched recently, surprised me as it exceeded my expectations.

I've also heard good things about Stake Land, and have added it to my LoveFilm rental queue.

No, unfortunately not.

As I've mentioned, I usually shy away from modern horror (there's still too many pre 1990s horror films I haven't yet seen!), due to becoming 'disenchanted' with it through the latter part of the 2000s. I'm therefore (blissfully?) unaware of most new films.

Just filtering via IMDB now on horror films made between 2010 and 2011, and I'm probably aware of 1 in 10 and have only probably watched 1 in 20. Compare that to a random year from the '70s or '80s, and I've most likely heard of more-or-less all of them, and have watched around 90%.

I am slowly starting to come around to watching more 'nu-horror', and have been generally pleased with some of the more hyped-up 'heavy-hitters' so far. I don't tend to actively seek out some of these newer indie horrors, although I actually do have The Pack at home unwatched - is it any good?

One of the latest indie horror films I can remember enjoying was Colin, which on remembering discussions here when it was released, is a very 'Marmite' film!
