FWIW I really like Pacific Rim – it's like a live-action Evangelion film with great design and action sequences.

SLAUGHTER OF THE VAMPIRES (1962)

After fleeing from an vampire hunting mob, one of the vampires has his coffin moved to a cellar of an old castle. A newly wed couple move in to the castle and the vampire soon sets his sights on the beautiful Louise (Graziella Granata).

A favourite of mine that stems from the days of Super 8mm home movies.
A lot of movies used to pass through mine and a mates collection and this was one that we used to have as a full feature on 4x400ft reels. There was also a selected scene edition available and a cut down scene edition on a 200ft reel which featured the final moments of the film.

REVENGE.

Director Coralie Fargeat's re-working of I Spit on Your Grave from 2nd Sight films is just as you'd expect it to be from that first sentence. You can tell it's meant to be a social commentary on how men treat women as sexual objects and just enough grey areas to be able to argue that it is an important look at how society views what is and what is not acceptable for a woman to do with her body. Hmmm....it's a lot of things but thought provoking, it's not!

The 3 male protagonists are portrayed as the most vile of men because as we all know, all men are potential rapists... Ignore the lead heavy grandstanding and suspend belief of do-it-yourself surgery and you will find a competent rape-revenge pot boiler. Sporting injuries that would kill most people our heroine stabs, shoots and kills the men who violated her.

Beautifully shot and acted, it is very competent and easy on the eye. Blood and gore cover the screen, thankfully devoid of too much CGI - and if you are not curling your toes into a tight ball when rapist A pulls broken glass out of his foot you are a better man than me - but this is not going to take you into any new territory you have not seen a dozen times before. As just a pure exploitation movie, it works well, as a social commentary it nearly drowns itself in self righteousness. If you like these type of films it's worthy of a watch once.

Spider Baby. 1967.

Bruno, a caretaker in a old house looks after three siblings after their father dies and tries to cover up their murderous action.

Lon Chaney Jr plays the kind hearted caretaker who looks after the mentally challenged siblings and to stop family members taking over the estate while the girls play the game "spider" wrapping their victims in a net and killing them. Chaney is always in fine form in this bizarre atmospheric film, there is no gore but we get a sense of something will happen but not sure when or how. There is great cinematography and a eerie background score and a good acting all around even from Sid Haig.

Paganini_Horror_(1989_film).jpg

When a hit rock band can't seem to write their next big hit one of the members buys an unreleased music sheet of famous Italian composer Paganini. They go to the house where Paganini lived and rent it out from the current owner to film the video for the song they have named Paganini Horror with a famous horror director. Things instantly go wrong when the band members start to disappear.

Its a great premise but executed so so wrong. The dubbed version is hilarious the things they say are so ridiculous. There are a few decent gore effects but not too much is shown the camera pulls away and the screaming ladies are just sprayed with buckets of blood. Not much happens only a few women screaming and running around a house pretty boring. I had heard about the dubbing for Donald Pleasence after he didnt have time to do his own dubbing but i wasn't prepared for how hilarious it was going to be The twist reveal at the end was so stupid i just sat here laughing like where the hell did that come from like the whole film was just made up as it went along.

This is the equivalent of when we were teenagers pre internet and we bought albums based off awesome artwork but this time around it didnt pay off

If you can see this and it cost no money its worth watching for the pure ridiculousness it will make you laugh but I'm not sure thats enough.

Best thing about this film is the purple catsuit

Completely agree, it doesn't really hold up against the Horror movies from the 90's onwards.

Default True Believer

True Believer

1989 Courtroom Drama starring James Woods as a Civil Rights Lawyer who takes the case of a convicted killer who may have been framed. He is assisted by a very young looking Robert Downey Jr. It's a decent watch but it follows most of this particular genre's clichés, has this annoying theme music after you heard it too many times and it has the look of a Made For TV Movie, James Woods also sports this most hideous Ponytail, It's so hideous, that I thought it was based on a True Story.

Octopussy (1983)

One of the less celebrated of the Bond outings but i think it has a lot going for it.

Yes there are some dumb one liners and the 'James' exclamation from Octopussy as the credits roll is embarrassing but on the whole this is better than most give it credit for thanks to some stirring action scenes, a circus race against time which is genuinely tense and a fast moving script.

Certainly Roger Moore is on borrowed time in the role but he's more credible in this than his swansong A View to a Kill a couple of years down the line. Arguably the villains are weaker than the majority of films but the actual story is more down to earth and indeed original than many of the films prior, and since.
