Let me try to ease my way in with Perfect Blue...

*I couldn't even read "Scott Pilgrim" because of the massive Japanese influence on the art style.
Alot of american comic book readers laugh at me for reading 2000AD, calling bullshit that a comic book can even be puclished in BaW these days, and specificaly someone called the art of Strontium Dog 'bullshit'. I disagreed out right, calling how america has given us Rob liefeld and other shit stanes, but on top of that it's everyones opinion that matters. Don't like the art style? Fair enough, I just disagree with you, Rei Hirou is a master and one of the worlds best IMHO, but i'm not going to fioster your opinion on you. Ironicly, I can't stand the animation on Perfect Blue. Bargain bin at best.

But it's not some cutesy bad-DMT trip about wood spirits and little girls and half animal/half vehicles horrors or pigs flying aeroplanes right?

I wish I could get across how unpleasant and disturbing I find the likes of Spirited Away!

I don't mind weird and disturbing narratives in themselves (cripes, my favourite living film-maker is Jan Svankmajer!), it's when rendered using THAT art style...gives me the horrors and alienates me.

It's far more the art style than the subject matter, though subject matter that I fins interesting can make the art just about work putting up with.

No. The art on Perfect Blue is just really cheap. That it really.

I have Perfect Blue on now. It does look cheap, but then so does about 80% of the anime I have seen*, so it isn't jarring in anyway. Other than the horrible, horrible faces, it's relatively bearable: looks like a lot of comics I have read in the agreeably stark lack of detail.

*including kids' TV and stuff.

But if you look at all animation theres a general lack of facial movements, look at ****ing Hanna Barbera for gawds sake! Then look ar Samurai Champloo or Ghost in the Shell and the facial movements are stunningly detailed!

Putting the aesthetics aside for a moment, the film is brilliant in terms of its conception, story and longevity.

Hated it.

May have hated it even more than the appalling Blood: The Last Vampire...wait...that may not be possible

Which is what I must seek from Japanese animation, as the look is always going to seem off-putting to me, no matter how detailed and expensive looking.
