I wouldn't say I hated them or even disliked them but I do find that most of DePalma's films are incredibly melodramatic, bordering on the verge of cheese (I'm thinking RAISING CAIN, BODY DOUBLE, OBSESSION and the waaay OTT SCARFACE). His visual flair is impressive, the cinematography in OBSESSION is particularly stunning, and the camerawork is pretty innovative. But somehow most of his films don't do it for me. The storylines are generally a bit loopy and the melodrama approaches DALLAS levels

I think it means hand relief I'm not a huge fan of Full Metal Jacket, but R.Lee Ermey's character is great and really funny too.I personally prefer Oliver Stone's Platoon.

"do you suck dick?"
"sir, no, Sir!"
"Bullshit! I bet you can suck a goofball through a garden hose!!!!"

I liked DePalma's Scarface in some ways, it just isn't a patch on the Paul Muni one. So sAying that, yes, it is overrated

De Palma is hit an miss, but when he gets it right, he scores - Blow Out is a great movie - but that's for another thread I guess... Funnily enough, I don't think Bonfire of the Vanities is the train wreck it's made out to be - I'd highly recommend Julie Salamon's book The Devil's Candy: The Bonfire of the Vanities Goes to Hollywood, which chronicles the unhappy making of the film, and all the absurdities that De Palma had to deal with - it's a wonder that anyone makes films at all...

Apparently, neither did Kubrick so, after the take, he asked R Lee Ermey what it meant and, after the explanation, Kubrick burst out laughing and decided to keep it as it was.

Matthew Modine said that Ermy had the worst bad breath and those scenes where he's screaming in his face were a real endurance test... especially when Kubrick would say "Let's do it again" ad nauseum... I think the film is a masterpiece, the bombed out Viet Cong city is one of the best battle landscapes in Cinema - it's impossible not to think of the film when watching Ryan or City of Life and Death...

R Lee Ermey is pretty great in Texas Chainsaw Massacre...he's mean...

I also read most of the characters' reactions are the real reactions of the actors as Kubrick insisted Ermey not socialise with the other cast members, so they only saw him in character as the drill instructor and, because most of his lines weren't scripted, he genuinely intimidated and surprised them.

Yeah I imagine all Kubrick shoots were intense, his threatment of Shelly Duvall (who's a wonderful actress) on the set of The Shining was terrible (seen in the Making of film). I like the way the Basic Training section of Full Metal Jacket riffs on the training section of Spartacus - I used to think that the Drill Instructor's threatment of the recruits was inhuman, but I guess it's required if you're gonna send guys to live twenty-four-seven with bullets, bombs and people who's sole purpose is to kill them...
