I've always considered Zombie Flesh Eaters overrated, and The House by the Cemetery is just okay, but it's at least better than the odious atrocity that is The New York Ripper. Other than that, this is a good read overall, and is a solid enough list as an introduction to the work of Lucio Fulci. City of the living Dead is very good, and The Beyond is easily his greatest horror film. Perversion Story, Lizard in a Woman's Skin, The Psychic, and Don't Torture a Duckling are some of the very finest gialli I've ever seen. That latter title there is probably Fulci's masterpiece.

Sorry but when did Perversion Story become a horror staple? Must have missed that meeting.... Will defend NYR .... a sour reposte to his critics imho. And it's not quite as repellent as say, Disclosure. Now that was an 'odious' film imo. Shocks ... have you seen his Beatrice Cenci? A film that doesn't seem to be represented in the poll ahem. Duckling is up there but to me this is his best work. Just saying ...

Well it's nice that they have so many handy pointers nowadays .... In my day you had to do your own detective work. I look forward to a deluge of reissues in Cex then.

Watching The New York Ripper (1982) To the uninitiated ... a right load of quackingly violent tosh .... but to enthusiasts it is a panapoly of miasmic archetypes (strokes beard so vigourously ... it catches fire). AHEM. Word weary detective tracks psycho in the beeg shitty. Well this apple is somewhat sour. Peopled by opportunist vermin of all shades, these streets really do need a real rain etc Our torporous hero shuffles upon the truth ... but nae afore there's some reekingly apparent (to modern eyes stunted by CGI) graphic FX along the way. A nasty but not totally black in tone film imo.

But the uninitiated wouldn't get the 'quackingly violent tosh' remark!

I was wondering if Beyond Terror is in colour? That's what i found disappointing about the Jess Franco book. The lack of colour photos. Fulci like Franco is a visually stunning director and to be honest black and white photos just won't do in my opinion. |
