Even back in the 80s, he was a decent drummer at best. Just listen to Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" album (a fantastic album, by the way) and compare it to Anthrax' "Spreading the Disease" (an even better album) - they are poles apart in terms of drumming.

As for Nicko McBrain: his predecessor Clive Burr was a better drummer. Compare the original "Phantom of the Opera" with Burr to this poor live version from 2005:
