There is a difference between the atmosphere with Michael Hordern, who is possibly delusional, possibly mourning, or possibly on holiday. That's part of the brilliance of the story, but the updated version is just a little more satisfactory because of the scenes set in the care home, and altogether more devastating because of how it finishes.

Michael Hordern's take on the character did seem more in line with James' story but I felt the introduction of Hurts wife and the circumstances under which he goes on holiday add an emotional depth the story benefits tremendously from.

I fell asleep during the Hordern episode last night. I'd just watched Lost Hearts and decided on one more before 2am. Woke up at 3.35 am.
