When the aging porn star protagonist of A SERBIAN FILM meets his soon-to-be director, warning bells should have sounded. Any man who describes a hired dick as a “an artist of fuck” clearly has a screw loose. Other pointers might be the all black outfit and the vaguely satanic facial hair. Maybe the fact that he shakes hand and doesn’t let go for the remainder of the scene may offer a clue to the fragile sanity of the filmmaker.
Having watched this film a few times now, I think this, like the other clips I’ve shared in previous weeks (see links at the bottom of the page), is a pivotal scene. This is the moment when a sensible person would turn back. Suspicions would be raised. Why does this guy think I’m an artist? What kind of film is he planning? Why won’t he let go of my hand?
Perhaps our porn star hero is so blinded and jaded by his years of sexual performance that his radar has gone awry. Similarly, maybe years of exposure to really tough pornography can make a viewer jaded and distort their moral compass…
