I guess what they are talking about here in the main is the use of yellowface for an oriental character, missing the point that he is an alien, and might therefore look other-worldly.

I don't think its unreasonable that modern audiences might raise an eyebrow but I think they are quite capable of recognising films in the context of when they were made.

It looks like we might start seeing the introduction of warning stickers like those that appeared on CDs when the moral minority got their knickers in a twist about bad language in songs.

But don't worry about cuts because films are protected by the Human Rights Act under the freedom of expression rule... oh shit... forgot about Brexit and the and associated aim to tear it up...

ah well, you should always be careful about what you vote for...
Yes, totally agree. Because the BBFC never cut anything until Brexit came along.

Well to a certain extent, I'm teasing of course. The Brexit thing is a poor analogy other than to point out that the gaining of one freedom can always lead to the loss of another.

Let's look at history for a moment. The censorship of film and television, for the most part through history, was usually a conservative led agenda, which culminated with the video nasty clampdown. Anti-censorship was a battle cry for liberals (who can forget Pink Floyd's attack on Mary Whitehouse?) and culminated in the massive relaxations in the late 90s (and protected under EU laws i.e. The Human Rights Act).

Isn't it ironic that the liberal forces that fought censorship are now potentially the drivers for a new type of censorship which could be so damaging to to the history of film, whilst at the same time the old conservative forces try to dismantle the legislation that protects freedom of expression?

Looks like a double whammy to me?

My sister has just told me that she is watching the 'Carry On...' films marathon on ITV3, and they are being preceded by a warning that effectively says "blah blah humour of its time..etc"!!

I'm not sure why people get so caught up and upset by these warnings, they're not harming the films since they're not being cut and censored.

For example, I only watched The Dam Busters for the first time last year (yes I know...) and if it wasn't for the warning prior to the film I really would have been caught off guard when the dog was called on screen for the first time. It didn't affect my enjoyment of the film though, I still thought it was a 5 star movie experience.

What worries me a little is that Sid James phwoaring at Barbara Windsor is something that people might be offended by in late 2020. Is innuendo just not on anymore?

I agree and I watched Carry on Dick the other day for Babs, and it is in my eyes harmless saucy fun, but I grew up on it. I can understand why people would see it with different eyes if their first exposure to it was in 2020. all the while people like Jimmy Carr and Franky Boyle can be genuinely vile to all and sundry and go on sell out UK tours that last 12-18 months at a time...

However, at the end of the day, a disclaimer talking about out-dated attitudes at the start of the film does no harm in my opinion

Carry on films are like at the time what was called seaside postcard humour even that barely exist anymore.

Some people don't want us to have a sense of humour, like 70s T.V. shows Love Thy Neighbour, Heil Honey i'm Home,, they were laughable but again Borderline, without the Carry On films we wouldn't know how to laugh.

Wasn't Heil Honey ... actually from the 90s there Mr B??

Regardless, censoring something on tv is a moot point now, what with all your outlets for whatever form of media you digest ...
