Edit: Actually, that might not qualify. Can't remember whether its set on a base or not. Good film though.
As the title suggests, it is set on the moon, which is neither a spaceship nor a space station – your list is really good as it is!

I can appreciate the Giger production design for Alien but bugger all happens for fifty minutes so when you've seen a group of astronauts bicker and marvel at a grounded space ship once then that's enough.

I know that's contrary to popular opinion but they don't really grab me and never have done. Prometheus was good but follow up Alien: Covenant was dreadful.

I've said before on the forum, think it was to B_e. I'm not really the biggest sci-fi movie fan.

Of more recent films i thought Gravity was okay, Passengers was dross, but Ender's Game (basically a reworking of Full Metal Jacket) was good.

I hated the remake of Solaris so won't go near the original which is probably so arty farty i'll be nodding off.
Wow, you really don't like sci-fi! I think Alien is a masterpiece of suspense and claustrophobic horror. The world building and design, from the Nostromo to the Xenomorph, is superb.

I loved Gravity at the cinema and when I've seen it at home – it's one of the few films which really benefited from a 3-D presentation (Avatar was another) and has quite exceptional sound design and music, and the use of CGI never fails to impress.

I didn't like Steven Soderbergh's Solaris when I first saw it, but it's grown on me over the years and I may actually prefer it to Tarkovsky's version. They are very different films because of how they have adapted the source material.

Might give Alien a rewatch tonight. It's years since i last saw it. When i say years i don't mean a couple, i mean fifteen perhaps more. I know i've only watched my dvd the one time.

Thinking aloud. I did buy it again as part of a mint condition Alien Quadrilogy set last year from a charity shop for a quid. Wonder where that is?

Which version is recommended? Theatrical cut (116 mins) or directors cut (111 minutes)

Go for the directors cut there is more suspense in it than the theatrical cut

I prefer the theatrical cut as the stuff in the director's cut doesn't really add much to the story and can be distracting from what should be the focus.

It's interesting for a repeated watch, but not for an occasion like yours.
