Insidious: The Last Key (2018)

Why do i keep tormenting myself with shit like this?

Survival of the Dead (2009)

George A Romero's final zombie film arrived when the world was awash with zombie movies and unfortunately it really doesn't stand out from the crowd.

Obviously low budget following the huge flop that was Diary of the Dead, this has the feel of a low budget direct to dvd movie and for the first part is quite slick and satisfying, but during the second half Romero takes us into Hatfield and McCoys and zombies western territory and the whole thing becomes decidedly less interesting.

The effects are poor, in fact the CGI is very poor and the zombies themselves, well at times i couldn't tell the living from the dead, especially in the case of the two sisters.

The first time i watched Survival of the Dead i really liked it but time has not been kind to it unfortunately

This wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, Yeah Italian Jaws rip off (i'm sure i heard the first notes of the John Williams score from Jaws aswell), the acting is what you would expect low budget cheese fest even with some good POV shots and some what a bit of bad dubbing mixed in. The croc itself was designed decently enough even though it ain't believable to be real but we did have plenty decent blood baths and good make-up effects, certainly worth a rewatch.

This is the first time seeing this since the VHS era and found it enjoyable, even to this day it's still enjoyable, it did get a bad reputation around the school for being crap, it does have a decent story and plot to it. Van Damme does throw a few kicks and punches then unleashes his style in the finale. Raul Julia plays another good bad guy like he did in The Rookie, even though he was limited to do more due to his illness but his appearance is still good mixed with comedy that still stands out, at least we get to see Kylie in pigtails and a nice tight vest.

The 1st Van Damme I was able to see at the Cinema. I've heard that the 88 Films Blu-Ray has added scenes, is this true?

This isn't a blockbuster success, even having Flash Gordon in the tile lead who is a street brawler boxer and heavy man who when challenged...he fights, them fighting words. Abe Vigoda and Harry Guardino play the heads of the families in truce until one breaks the truce and wants everything. It does have the typical American accent trying to do part Italian hard men. The plot does go a bit weak along the way and then gets a bit better but the fight scenes do make up for it in some ways.

The first time I saw this and reviewed it, I gave it quite a bashing and probably swore I wouldn't watch it again but after a bit of peace and quiet (chromebook on and headphones on) second time watch and actually enjoyed it.

It seems to focus more on creation of life, from the start Weyland and David discussing life as David was created and asking who created his maker, that's more of before Prometheus journey looking for the creation of mankind. But like the other movies you have a new spaceship captain making a bad judgement then regretting the decision. Michael Fassbender returns as the android David and Walter (more advanced synthetic). The characters were a bit more appeasing to the point you become sympathetic as they will be sacrificed and begin to understand how the Aliens were created and became more of a hybrid species. The visual and special effects were done nicely along with some good cinematography. Hope Mr Scott does not screw up the next chapter in this when he does get round to making it even though it has been announced.

Attachment 229288

I think that if this was Prometheus 2 instead of having Alien in the title that it would have been better received.

Blended

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore team up for the 3rd time where they are both single parents who after a bad blind date end up sharing a African Holiday. Obviously they all live happily ever after but it's a decent watch, it does have some funny moments.

Major League: Back To The Minors

Yes this is the 3rd Major League Movie and this time Scott Bakula is the Minor League Coach who tries to get one over the Coach of the Major League team. I quite enjoyed this movie and whilst it doesn't have Charlie Sheen and Tom Berenger, it does have Corbin Bernson, Bob Uecker and some others from the 2nd one.

Sloane

A former Cop goes to the Philippines to find his ex-girlfriend who has been abducted. He teams up with her best friend and his best friend. The acting and script ain't good and I've seen better Action scenes but it does have a random scene of Cannibalism similar to Mountain Of The Cannibal God. It's a film I didn't switch off half way through but it's not one I'm likely to see again nor will I buy it if it got a Blu-Ray release.

That being said, the 1st Advert on this VHS was for a Film called Devouring Waters which is a Italian Jaws rip-off, but it's perfect for 88 Films. Also was weird seeing a Advert for CHUD as a coming soon release.

Retribution

A struggling Artist tries to commit Suicide but at the same time a low level Hoodlum is gunned down (They were also born at the same time) so the Hoodlum possesses the Artist's body and takes over when he's asleep and gets his revenge on his killers. This is more of a psychological Supernatural Horror than a full on Horror gore fest, it does give the impression of some gory deaths but doesn't go all the way. The Lead Actor is convincing in his role but the movie was ok.

One of the Trailers, Cameron's Closet is perfect for Eureka, bit of a coincidence that 976 Evil was the Trailer after it.

I MONSTER
Christopher Lee stars in this Amicus adaptation of the Jekyll and Hyde tale ( even though the characters have different names ).
I think it’s fair to say that this film wouldn’t be in many people’s’ top ten of all time, but it does have its moments - notably a nightmarish sequence in which Lee’s alter ego is seen as a skull like figure.
Any film with Lee and Peter Cushing is worth a watch and both give great performances here.
Needless to say, Indicator’s Blu Ray looks fantastic.

SHOCK TREATMENT
A woman goes to a controversial health clinic in an attempt to regain her youth, in this bizarre 1972 French flick.
Once there, she discovers things aren’t quite as they seem, with waiter staff constantly disappearing and strange experiments going on in secret.
A difficult film to categorise, but that helps to make it an enjoyable and unique viewing experience.

The Incredible Hulk. 2008

Scientist Bruce Banner tries to find a cure for the monster he turns into when he gets angry while trying to escape from the U.S. Government, as he gets close to finding a cure, another creatures emerges Abomination.

Being a fan of the T.V. Series and looked forward to the 2003 film and felt really disappointed, I held off seeing this until a work mate told me it was a lot better, a year after it's release I watched it and now its a favourite in the household.

I wasn't sure if Edward Norton was the right choice but did manage to pull it off decently and even writing the script, William Hurt takes the role as General Ross who seems more believable to be a prick than Sam Elliott. Tim Roth stars alongside as the group leader sent in to find Banner and becomes the guinea pig for the abandoned super soldier programme that has consequences and Liv Tyler and Betty Ross the love interest who tries to help Banner find a cure.

The CGI is actually done decently and makes Hulk more realistic where youlook at the screen and think or shout "aw come on really", nothing is done over the top Louis Lettier done a decent job directing and knew how to entertain the audience and managed to add in a decent background score by Craig Armstrong.

Strange Days (1995)

What a movie Strange Days is. In it's two hour twenty fine minutes you'll run the whole gamut of emotions as director Kathryn Bigelow takes us on one hell of a thrill ride in this audacious, uncompromising noirish near future sci-fi murder mystery.

Set during the final two days of December 1999 in an L.A. on the brink of social breakdown, the film thrusts us into the sleazy life of Lenny Nero (A never better Ralph Fiennes) as he sells his highly illegal tripwires - a virtual reality experience in which the wearer of a headset experiences both visually an emotionally certain events - mainly pornographic. It's through a tripwire experience that Lenny witnesses the graphic rape and strangulation of a young woman. On occasions the violence is hard to watch yet it also mesmerizes in it's unflinching yet imaginative portrayals of the sadism.

Added to the mix is a raging slab of police induced violent racism taking the movie in new and exciting directions and also making it as socially aware as can possibly be in the here and now.

Bigelow ensures the film grips from the off, helped by a pounding soundtrack from the likes of Lords of Acid, Strange Fruit, Skunk Anansie and even co-star Juliette Lewis, and she maintains the edge throughout whilst introducing is to a plethora of weird and wonderful characters in the race to a pulse pounding finale as the clock strikes midnight.

As well as Fiennes who somehow makes us believe the weaselly Lenny is some sort of anti-hero, Angela Bassett really stands out as an emotionally conflicted limo driver and Lenny's only true friend who saves him from near death several times.

Kathryn Bigelow won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker fourteen years later whilst Strange Days failed to capture a mainstream audience (it's not difficult to see why as portions of this film are way too extreme) and flopped big time. I know which movie i prefer!

The Vampire Bat. 1933.

When villagers start dying due to loss of blood panic is set out as people believe there is a vampire while a police inspector remains sceptical.

Lionel Atwill plays the doctor living in the castle conduction his own experiments on life and death. Melvyn Douglas plays the inspector who believes the killings are of a mad man and not a vampire. Fay wray plays the doctors assistant but doesn't seem to much except stand around and looked shocked and amazed. The downside to this is the editing at it seemed to be processed in a hurry and sometimes it looks at though it may have missed out seconds of the plot. This has always been a good little murder mystery chiller from the 30s from a small forgotten Hollywood studio who seemed to cheap out on the film but does pay off with the explanation on the ending that does have a good build up.

A mixture of drama , comedy and modern fairy tale.

When shock jock , Jack Lucas( Jeff Bridges) causes a listener to go on a killing spree his life spirals out of of control, one night he is nearly killed but is rescued by bum Perry ( Robin William's) whom has had a psychotic break and believes he is a knight seeking the holy grial after the killing of his wife , of course we soon learn that it was the listener from Lucas show that killed Perry's wife and feeling responsible he sets out to help his new friend, but just who is helping who as both men try to get there lives back together , amazing acting from the two leads and easily some of the best work they have done. 9/10

The Phantom. 1931.

A group of people are stalked by a killer known as The Phantom in a house.

Another dark house mystery thriller with a mad man on the loose, secret passages, a undercover reporter and a very squeamish frightened maid and chauffeur who are well suited to be a couple. What made me laugh was the jailbreak that was something that looked like it came from a old comedy. The film does loose it's peak a bit then turns back up again, Enjoyable enough but second viewing may help.

A recently paroled prisoner hits a man for attacking a woman and runs away fearing he may have killed the man.

This was a not bad crime thriller, Ralph Bellamy plays the recently parolee who comes across Fay Wray being chased by Melvyn Douglas and plants one on him but Wray is no angel as she has stolen Jewels on her. When I say it's not bad it is a bit of a slow movie in some areas and seems very low budget and there is one or two laughs install. Enjoyable to watch.

Scream In The Night. 1935.

A colonial police detective seeks a stolen gem and goes undercover as a wharf side bar owner to seek the ones who stole the gem.

Lon Chaney Jr does a mediocre duel roles, this may not be his finest film but it is entertaining, with the age of the film I had to switch out the light as the film gets darker in some bits and become hard to watch. It is a weird crime film that can go at a snails pace then picks itself back up even with some feisty females tag along for a bit.

The Most Dangerous Game. 1932.

After being shipwrecked on a island, sole survivor Bob takes shelter with a count and two other guests and finds out the count is a game hunter and he may be his next prey.

This was a decent movie, Leslie Banks plays the mysterious count who plans on using humans for his big hunt along with his servant Ivan (Noble Johnson), Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong play the siblings who were mysteriously shipwrecked with other people who have now vanished and Joel McCrea as the new arrival Bob.

This was probably for it's time quite suspenseful and still is a tense movie to watch, it's really not the plot that can make it tense which the acting can make it tense also. Any fans of Turkey Shoot may like this old movie, certainly worth a look.

The Dark Eyes of London. 1939. (aka The Human Monster).

The deaths of men happen to be put down to accidents but all had ties to a insurance company run by a sinister Dr. Orloff.

Low budget, shady cinematography and not the greatest of sets but this was still a bit creepy, Bela Lugosi plays the sinister Dr. Orloff who murders people and collects their policy money. it is decently done with Lugosi and police inspector Holt played by Hugh Williams as the play cat and mouse games and Orloff trying to get the daughter from one of his victims. Fans of Lugosi will certainly enjoy this little chiller.

HELLGATE – This notorious example of accidental surrealism makes less and less sense as the years go by. Sometimes I can’t work out whether it’s a bad film played straight, or worse, an attempt at comedy that turned out excruciatingly unfunny, but whatever foul magic pulled it into existence, its unholy collision of zombie-producing laser crystals, bad western film sets masquerading as towns, ghostly can-can dances and guys with random bits of metal stuck to their faces still leaves me feeling a bit high to this day. Highest recommend.

CRUCIBLE OF TERROR – Really good seventies Brit horror which is a bit like a coastal giallo until its crazy plunge into the supernatural at the end. Unlikely lad James Bolam is a groovy gallerist who visits the retreat of his drunken pal’s mad artist dad. Nothing heavy or sleazy, just a few tame murders and a parade of weird characters and strange moments, but lots of good atmosphere and eccentricity.

FRANKY AND HIS PALS – I would say that this stillborn ‘horror comedy’ has to be seen to be believed, but, having seen it, I can’t quite bring myself to believe it. Shot on video in 1990, it follows a bunch of classic movie monsters – Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolfman, The Mummy, Quasimodo – as they wander around a hotel looking for ‘the secret gold’. That’s literally all that happens, apart from odd asides such as the one where the quintet judges a bikini beauty competition and performs (really badly) as a band. I would attempt to communicate how excruciating all this is, but my literary wherewithal is not equal to that task. Instead I will simply note that Dracula looks and sounds a bit like internet guru / f*ckwit Jordan Peterson, Wolfman comes out in a subplot that is too scrambled to decode as either liberating or deeply homophobic, no-one minds being groped by the middle aged dude who looks like he owns a car show-room and it all ends with everyone happily going back in time. That last option might appeal to viewers wanting more than just their money back, but somehow I can see myself watching it again.

THE BLACK CAT – This Luigi Cozzi film is amazing. It’s a sort-of riff on Argento’s ‘The Three Mothers’ cycle, but really it’s just loads of freaky imagery set in a big posh house and comes complete with Bava-lighting overkill, gut shower explosions, random shots of deep space and just a really massive quota of nonsense. I won’t go into details because I’ve reviewed it on the Labs before, back when it was only really available as a cruddy bootleg or a knackered tape. I was never expecting it to land on Blu-Ray, but here it is courtesy of Severin, and wonderful it looks too. Surely a pinnacle of endgame Italian horror back in the late eighties.

Tremors. 1990.

Natives to a small Nevada isolated town come under attack by subterranean creatures.

Tremors is basically a landlocked variation on 'Jaws' and those 1950s giant bug movies: the isolated town of Perfection, Nevada (population 16), finds itself under seige by four monstrous, subterranean wormlike creatures that hunt by vibration.

Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward play the handymen turned unlikely heroes with some humour and team up with a sizemology student trying to figure out where these creatures came from. Sometimes movies like this end up having some stupid people doing daft thing and release them from hibernation or opening Pandora's Box but the characters react believably to the horror. Michael Gross and Reba McIntyre play the armed couple who seem to live on the outbreak of war but face a different war.

Given it's premise it isn't as gory as it sounds, maybe one or two close up kills but we do get to see the insides of the Graboids either by explosion or breaking through a rock wall to, It's amazing how this didn't have much going for it when it was first released and now it's a classic.

1990 CBS Fox release starring a (After Top Gun and before E.R.) Antony Edwards and a (Before he got big) Forest Whitiker in a mis-matched Buddy Cop movie in which a demoted Cop teams up with a reluctant Detective in a downtrodden area in investigating the murder of his friend. Seen it all before really, it's o.k. however it does have a nice throat slashing scene and a scene where a villain gets thrown from a top of a moving car into a wood chipper and all the blood sprayed over all. Guessing that's how it earned it's 18 certificate.

The Big Score

Fred Williamson is a Detective who is accused of stealing a million dollars from a drugs raid by Police and Mobsters who go after him in order to get it back. Richard Roundtree and John Saxon also star. Not bad for a film from it's time (1983)

Leviathan

Peter Weller is the leader of a deep sea diving team in which they come across a sunken Russian ship which had a failed experiment on board. Obviously the team unwittingly picks up the monster and ends up killing the crew. This I believe was the 3rd of a bunch of this type of film (Abyss and Deep Star Six) and this is the better film.

3:15

A former gang member gets caught up in the middle again when his former gang accuse him of tipping off the Police after a raid at school. I love this type of movie and this was an excellent watch, I found it riveting even though The Principle had the same ending virtually (That film was released afterwards)

Wings Of The Apache

Nicholas Cage is a Fighter Pilot who is trained by Tommy Lee Jones to fly a Apache Helicopter against Drug Cartels. Sean Young also stars in this Top Gun vain of film.

Tremors 2: Aftershocks. 1996.

Earl is coerced to face Graboids again, this time in Mexico with self obsessed fan Grady, when things get too much they call in help from Burt then things change.

The Tremors movies are not to be taken seriously and Tremors 2 is no different. It's a fun, light hearted monster movie that you can sit back and enjoy. Fred Ward and Michael Gross return from the first movie unfortunately Kevin Bacon didn't return and do try to keep the humour with the cast. There is partly bad CGI effects added in but they can be ignored.

This went straight to home release, Universal held a screening for test audiences who loved it yet it was shelved as they couldn't secure theatre's and two years later released it and like the previous film it is still enjoyable.

THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974)

Right up there with my favourite all time movies. I saw the film on release with my parents while on holiday and as such carries a lot of nostalgia with it as well.
For me, the best of the all star disaster movies of the 1970's and this is what big screen adventure and spectacle are all about.
Running for 2 hours and 45 mins, the movie had an intermission at the part Where the stairway explodes and Newman has to get the kids down the mangled stairs. The cinema was quite warm as well and that added to the atmosphere. When the movie was over, I remember my mum being a bit frightened about going back to our holiday flat in case it never had the right fire safety measures.
20th Century Fox and Warner Bros teamed up to produce the movie as both company's were going to adapt novels about a fire in a huge skyscraper.
Also for me, the poster features one of the best artworks ever on a movie poster.

:star::star::star::star::star:

** Please, never ever watch this movie on the likes of channel 5 etc..
The film is cut to shreds. I mean really butchered! And never ever in it's correct aspect ratio.

Languorous vampire tale. A young couple meet two women on a European tour whilst honeymooning. They aren't .... unfriendly certainly. But by gum, they take their time about it ahem.
Look, I know as a Jess Franco fan I have no legs at all to stand on regarding "expressionistic" cinema.
I KNOW
But this has always bored me rigid. Revisiting didn't help. It doesn't help either that apparently twas made to put his arty farty colleagues' noses out of joint, so I never really "felt it", and this is probably why ...

Give me a cloak and a scythe any day (or day for night tee hee)

NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXT!!! :pound:

You're insane, this film is amazing  Can't really compare it to Franco or Rollin, that's unfair :p

3:15, I also enjoy these type of American high school violence / gangs type like class of 84, saw this first time earlier this year since vhs days, which if I’m correct has not been transferred over from vhs to any other format which is a shame films like these need to be.

Demons 6: De Profundis aka The Black Cat (Cozzi)

Caroline Munro and Brett Halsey? SOLD.
A film director finds that not everyone is a fan in this rather bonkers tale of regret and retakes. Another find on YT, so the print's not that great, but it's on the list alright.:nod:

PS I instantly liked it more than The Three Mothers :nod::nod:

A documentary crew follow the lives of four flatmates and their every day lives which begins at 6 pm every afternoon because they are all vampires.

There is no plot just vampires going about their business trying to adapt into modern life like not getting to enjoy the most popular nightclubs because they can only enter if they are invited in and the trials and tribulations of trying to look your best in your fancy glad rags when you cant see yourself in the mirror. The look of the house and the clothes of each vampire looked great and the style of each character was really matched to their persona perfectly.

There are plenty of laugh out loud moments throughout and the banter between the vampires and the werewolves was some of the best especially the fake stick throw and the track suit pants V jeans scene
