Crispian mills film is VERY hit and miss imo. It looks fantastic, has a great soundtrack and some very funny scenes, but it also feels poorly paced, somewhat self-indulgent (not in a good way) and other sequences fall flat on their arse. Felt a lot longer than 90 minutes which is a shame because I really wanted to like this film.

Rent/lovefilm/charity shop it.

Terror Train

Wasn't too impressed with this. The characters annoyed me, the train setting was clever, but the sets inside did not impress. Possibly the darkest movie I've ever seen, with some scene being hard to work our what's going on. Most of the time it cuts away before a kill. Rather boring for the most part.

The premise reminded me of Slaughter High a lot though. And it has a pretty good score. And the last half was pretty suspenful, but that's about it. Would only reccomended if you're a real slasher or Jamie Lee Curtis fan.

Re-animator is suppossed to be an OTT comedy horror, the humour coming from how over the top and ridiculously extreme the film is. Trouble is 30 years later and it does'nt look all that extreme, I know people who have trouble with the evil dead for the same reason, while they prefer evil dead 2 because it's a different kind of humour, physical slapstick with grue which is possibly more timeless.
Very true, the short story isn't in the realms of the more eldritch / tentacular Lovecraft admired by most. Although the essence of Lovecraft is stylistic more than anything else for me.
I also agree with what you say about time dulling the edge of 'Reanimator's OTT blood & guts black comedy. I guess that's the price of progress! Having said this, I've never had the same problem with 'Evil Dead' - it has a kind of vicious hysteria about it that goes beyond comedy.

Gnaw (2008)

This film had everything going for it. A competant cast, decent dialogue, production values every bit as good as Hostel and House of 1000 Corpses. In short it looked the part.

What it didn't have which those films have were scares and/or gore. Some films, no a lot of films don't need gory imagery to succeed, we all know that. However when you are promoting yourself as torture porn and with a plot about cannibalism it helps to try and shock the viewer with some good old fashioned blood and guts.

So ultimately despite a reasonable story and good production values, Gnaw ends up a complete waste of time.

Oasis of Fear

Oasis of boredom more like Seemed to take forever for anything to happen, and only decided it wanted to be a thriller in the final 30 minutes or so. Reckon this one'll end up on ebay.

Opera

As entertaining as ever - the metal tracks scoring the murders seemed less distracting this time around. You could easily imagine this as OPERA 3D (don't get any ideas, Romero!) - every other shot seems to have something flying out at the camera - proper dynamic filmmaking! I suppose it's too much to hope he managed to replicate this style for Dracula 3D . . .

I didn't mind Gnaw, can't say I'm in any great rush to watch it again, as for DeathTube, I was tired and couldn't be arsed with the subs so I gave up on it
