Seriously? Was Boon in Lynch? I didn't know about this. I obviously hope you tell me he was in 'Eraserhead' or 'The Alphabet', but I bet you say 'Dune'! Actually, now I remember, the bit I cried over when I was a kid, 'the Elephant Man'. Evil man, Harry should've sorted him out.

It absolutely is, the style swamps the substance but what style ! Have you seen Medea - that's the only early Trier picture I've yet to see...

No I haven't seen it, and in fact I realise that, having had this conversation, I'm well overdue regards a Van Trier archival spree... to think that I was set to hit Luigi Cozzi's 'Contamination' next! Actually, no, sod it, I have to say, unfortunately, and all debts to high culture notwithstanding, I am going to have to go with 'Contamination'!

Decided on having a Zombie week this past seven days. I tend to theme my viewing, I find that it helps with seeing some of my less watched stuff! A little OCD goes a long way!

'Night of the Living Dead' (1968) 7/10
'Rabid' (1977) 7/10
'Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis' (2005) 2/10 (Dire )
'28 Days Later' (2002) 8/10
'28 Weeks Later' (2007) 7/10
'Day of the Dead' (2008) 7/10
'City of the Living Dead' (1980) 7/10
'Dellamorte Dellamore: Cemetery Man' (1994) 7/10

Anyway a little more serene next week 'Ray Harryhausen movies'.

I'd seen it two or three times over the years since it first came out, and to be honest had never thought much of it or taken it that seriously - hype can be unhelpful, perhaps especially on an unconscious level. I was surprised, even taken aback today at its intensity... I guess maybe I was connecting with it for the first time. The atmosphere of dread, conjured from very little, seemed pungent. Perhaps the moves were obvious and the content slight, but the effect was powerful and the sense of encroaching disorientation and 'something disturbing happening', aided no doubt by the then-fresh found footage technique, felt real and pervasive, more so outside of the obvious 'horror scenes'. Maybe it caught me at the right / wrong time today, but I came away from it feeling quite weirded out, which isn't something that happnes very often.
That's exactly how I feel about the film, with the escalating tension, disorientation and pervasive fear culminating in an extremely effective final sequence which is all the more disturbing because of the way it suddenly finishes.

It's been quite a long time since I last saw The Blair Witch Project, so I'm going to try and keep it in mind for another viewing sometime soon.

Recents

The Maltese Falcon - Watched Bogie dish out a little chin music last night - watching these film noirs really makes you aware of how infantile a lot of todays films are. This was a huge popular hit at the time yet the hero is a complete, irredeemable shit. This is bleak, bitter stuff all round - I loved it.

Headspace - for an hour or so I thought this was one of the better Poundland refugees, but then it descended into rubber monster hell and never came back. This coulda been a contender because it looks good and has some decent acting. Remember less is more guys, less is more.

The Terror of Tiny Town - I sat goggle eye watching this on some obscure satellite channel. Basically an hour of laughing at 'little people' dressing up as cowboys, like Bugsy Malone meets Shane on LSD. Did I say movies today were infantile....

My Bloody Valentine (remake) - Plot pitch - It's like 20 different ways to kill someone with a pick axe - we can have gouged eyeballs - in 3D!! There's a chick, who's like totally naked for an entire scene - in 3D!! We'll attract nostalgic old farts who saw the original 100 years ago and kids looking for some Friday night titty action and gore. Fat, jaded studio exec - how much do you need, shoot the damn thing!
