Don't post in this thread anymore because I'm rubbish at reviews. However felt the need to say I watched the BFI flipside disc of Nightbirds/The Body Beneath. Loved them both, my first views of the world of Andy Milligan. Had a looksy for any more releases of his films but there doesn't seem to be many? I know a lot of his movies are lost, which is shame. Really enjoyable. Body beneath is wonderful 'trash'.

| The Shrine (2010) A group of American journalists go to a village in Poland to search for a backpacker who has mysteriously gone missing. Upon arrival they find a place steeped in stories of strange cults and human sacrifice. I really enjoyed this film. One of the best i've seen from the last few years. The film is undeniably derivative making me think of The Wicker Man and Hostel Part 2 among others with echoes of Bava's Mask of Satan thrown in. After a slowish start which enables us to get to know the four journalists the pace picks up with the discovery of a strange mist on the outskirts of the village, and within it a grotesque statue. These scenes are beautifully done and an eerie atmosphere at once bleeds from the screen. The Shrine is classified 18 which had me mystified throughout until we arrived at the climax when all hell breaks loose and the bloody sfx come into their own. It sounds like another of those 'Americans go to Europe and bad things happen' movies, like Taken and Hostel!

Dr Jekyll vs the werewolf. Second on the code red double bill is one of the better Naschy waldamar daninsky werewolf films. Here a young couple visiting transylvania get mugged by local thugs and daminsky wades in to save them. Unfortuntaley the girls new hubbie dies, but thats ok bacause she quickly falls for ol' daninsky himself like most women in these films! Things start to get tense thanks to a pitchfork weilding mob so waldemar and the new missus head to london where they enlist the help of Henry Jekyll in a bid to cure waldemar of the curse. Things dont go according to plan and soon theres a hyde'd up daninsky terrorising 70's soho! Great fun, theres some print damage but the films a hell of a lot of good fun with some fairly nasty death scenes and a bit of kinky sadism thrown in as well. |
