It was as if that thread of the story was happening before Regan actually manifested any symptoms. | There is a scene in the Extended Director's Cut in which Father Karras asks Father Merrin why Regan as the position makes no sense, and he replies:
"I think the point is to make us despair. To see ourselves as animal and ugly. The makers reject the possibility that God could love us."
This is all the subtext anyway because of the devastating effect it has on Chris MacNeil, the destructive power of the possession on Father Karras – a man who is losing his faith – and basically to target something innocent and destroy it without rhyme or reason.
