What Films Have You Seen Recently?

My problem with last house is while the original was avowedly anti violence, making the revenge as soul destroying and destructive as the violence that inspired it, the remake goes the other way and sort of says "violence is actually pretty cool when it's for revenge". Mainly it really missed the point of the original.

I feel I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and the sequel were much better and more successful remakes in that regard because they actually 'got' the original while working as stand alone films. Something LHOTL remake does not really manage to do.

That's exactly how I feel about the remake – the revenge violence appears to be justified rather than an amoral act of self-destruction. The scene with the microwave at the end is laughably bad.

It is a sad reflection of the times in a post 9/11 world compared to the more complicated view Craven offers in the Nam heavy original.

He offered pretty much the same viewpoint in The Hills Have Eyes, something which changed slightly in that remake as well.

The politics in the THHE remake are very interesting with the underlying antisemitism in the first half before the rebirth of Israel in it's wham bam final! That's my take on it anyway.

Watched Umberto Lenzi's Nightmare Beach (1989). Interesting to see Michael Perks in a role way before Red State or Tusk and John Saxon is as good as ever. The plot (a mixture of 80's slasher, T&A beach party and biker movie) and story proceed enjoyably enough in a trashy B-movie way without ever overtly impressing. Where it does impress most are the suitably inventive and gruesome deaths by human frying; One involving a incinerator particularly stands out.

My only question is what happens to Saxon's character Stryker?

From 1961: part 1

The Guns of Navarone - Classic WWII action which sees an allied mission to destroy a massive German gun emplacement in Navarone. Almost ruined by Richard Harris' 'Australian' accent, thankfully he wasn't in it for long!

Barabbas - An Italian/US production about the criminal that was released by Pontius Pilate instead of Christ. Its actually quite a good movie that dosen't over do the religious side. The opening with Christ's cruxifiction during which theres a total solar eclipse is quite ominous. This is a film that needs a blu-ray presentation.

Reptilicus - A Danish/US production, I saw the English language US version, and my god it makes the latter Japanese Godzilla movies look like masterpieces! Terrible acting with equally awful effects a film to see when blindingly drunk!

Mothra - The single most use of Airfix kits I think I've ever seen!

Blue Hawaii - Standard Presley musical with some good music......every five seconds it seems!

The Comancheros - Director Michael Curtiz's last movie, although John Wayne also directed parts of it due to Curtiz being ill. Good fun western with a great performance by Lee Marvin and the Duke himself. It wasn't until the end shoot out that I realised that although this was set in 1843 they all seemed to be firing Winchester repeaters!

The Hustler - A bit on the slow side and overlong at 2h:15m. The pool action is ok but the story gets bogged down with the self destructive love story. Won the BAFTA Best Film from any source / Foreign Language the following year.

Victim - A Basil Dearden picture that like his earlier 1959 'Sapphire' deals with both intolerance and prejudice. With 'Sapphire' it was the attitudes towards blacks, in 'Victim' its against gays. With homosexuality being at that time illegal in Britain Dirk Bogards character, a barrister, stumbles across a blackmailing scheme that involves a number of victims, being gay himself he sets out to uncover the blackmailers even at the cost of his own career. A great movie and one that was originally banned in the US, it was also the first British film to use the word 'Homosexual'. Bogard said of the film that overnight he didn't have a single fan left.

Carry on Regardless - Standard Carry On really, more a series of vignettes rather than a single story.

Breakfast at Tiffanys - A classic? A lot of people would say so, even me, but its just too...Hollywood. Very much a film of its time, chic, glamorous, 60's fashions, although Hepburn's character was a child bride and Peppard has money left on his dresser by his rich 'girlfriend' its all very clean cut. If this were a british movie it would a lot more 'kitchen sink'.

Right now I'm watching Document of the Dead with the Roy Frumkes commentary. Really good stuff so far.
