Default Three Extremes, Embodiment of Evil

Just watched 'Three Extremes' and 'Embodiment of Evil'

TE must be highly recommended, I think there's something in it for anyone with a taste for intelligent horror. If you don't know, this is 3 short movies - 'Dumplings' by Fruit Chan is a Hong Kong movie about an aging actress' pursuit of beauty through sickening and extreme methods. 'Cut' by Park Chan Wook is a fast paced tale about a bitter young actor, twists, gore and plenty of interesting dialogue. The last short is 'Box' by Takeshi Mike - dreamlike and perplexing - was engrossed in this. Very satisfying movies all in all.

EoE - wow, I was really looking forward to watching this - the premise sounded great. Coffin Joe looks just like my old maths teacher so did little to scare me. He moved about like Papa Lazarou making me take him even less seriously. Crap story, crap movie, funny villain.

I loved 3 Extremes and was quite dissapointed with Three Extremes 2. None of the stories measure up.

If you enjoy asian horror anthologies then watch Phobia, its also got a follow up but its alright and not bas bad as three extremes follow up.

Three Extremes 2 is actually Three which was the original anthology released a couple of years before. I think they just renamed it to try and cash in because the director line-up was a lot more well-known on Three Extremes. Overall, I actually prefer Three I think but Dumplings is the best of all the segments for me, especially the longer version. I was a bit disappointed with the Park and Miike segments.

Haven't seen it but definitely looks interesting, especially as it involves the Shutter directors.

I loved it. Went to see it in the cinema twice and will be buying it on monday!

I love the Runaways, and I think that the covers by the girl from twilight and Dakota Fanning actually did the songs justice.

Thanks for the recommendation Nekromantik, will check 'Phobia' out along with some more Takashi Mike - probably 'Ichi the Killer' although would appreciate suggestions. I like credible twists and weird atmospheric stuff but am not averse to a bit of gore either!

Thailand seems such a happy place, be interesting to see what their horror is like. OMG, the sun has gone in and I've spent all my money on a ladyboy...

Phobia or, to give it its alternate title, 4bia, did come out on DVD in the UK because I reviewed it! Somehow though, the review has gone 'missing' on my website otherwise I would give you the hyperlink -- that's something to add to the 'to do' list for today.

Default The Killing of America & Mum and Dad

'The Killing of America' is a 1982 documentary chronicling the violence of 1970s USA. Exclusive footage of assassinations, protests, serial killers, cults and examples of the general violent crimes that swept the states. Weird times well contrasted with the conservative pre Elvis America which the narrator seems to represent. This period of US history saw massive change and the movie reminded me of Hunter S Thompson's articles around that time ('The Great Shark Hunt'). It's on YouTube if you're interested.

'Mum and Dad' - whoa! This is one f****d up beast of a movie. Perhaps inflenced by the Fred and Rose West story, this 2008 UK movie was a real unpleasant surprise to me and would probably make it into my top ten horrors of the decade. Darkly funny Dad (Perry Benson) is just great - sometimes sentimental and traditional othertimes raging temper and sickness. Can't wait for director Stephen Sheil's next project - anyone know anything?
