I made that joke on the previous page, but it went over everyone's heads. We're wasted on this place, mate . . .

I think The Thing is, along with Halloween, the best thing John Carpenter has ever done and pushes Assault on Precinct 13 down into third place (if not lower). It is rightly cited as one of the rare examples of a superior remake and a perfect exercise in suspense, tension and horror, with outstanding make-up and creature effects by Rob Bottin (under Stan Winston's supervision).

The Legend of the Owl (1981) "Legend of the Owl is a very silly film, a spoof of Chor Yuen style wu xia that is often quite hilarious. The humour is very reminiscent of Stephen Chiau's later parodies." (MrBooth) Only problem are the English subs which are even more wrecked as usual and make it very hard to follow...I think I got about 85% of what was being said. There's also several (typical to HK?) jokes in this one which had me scratching my head...locals must have found them hilarious but I had no idea what they were about. Overall I really enjoyed myself though. All dvd/vcd releases of this one seem to be oop nowadays.

Tonight I took a break from Carpenter (I only have The Ward left in my collection to rewatch) to see The Watermen. I actually found it much better than I remembered from the Frightfest Halloween all-night screening. Perhaps I was less tired this time round? It's actually watchable. I saw it on blu-ray (from Germany). Its available in the U.K. but only on DVD. |
