Prisoners This foreboding revenge/kidnapping thriller is anchored by some terrific central performances, especially Jake Gyllenhaal's measured but twitchy detective and Hugh Jackman's grieving father-on-the-edge, while Roger Deakins' gloomy, crisp cinematography maintains the oppressive atmosphere. That said, there's a few plot diversions that wouldn't hold up under scrutiny - not least as we approach our denouement - but I'm loathe to be too tough on it. That's not to ignore its misgivings, however, but to accept that the captivating performances, premise and realised misery won me over (and I've read some very scathing criticisms levelled at it). For a '15' rating it's surprisingly violent too. I've yet to see anything else in the director's oeuvre, but I'll be looking to rectify that shortly (I gather Incendies is especially good.) I definitely need to get them: I love Alan Moore's work. After that movie it's no wonder why he doesn't put his name in the credits for every movie based off his work.
