Like Rabid Dogs (1976)

Cesare Barro plays Tony, a good student from a wealthy family who with a couple of friends go on a prostitute killing spree in the evenings.

In a way this was similar to the other film on this Arrow Blu-ray disc in the Years of Lead set - The Savage Three - the idea of seemingly decent young men leading a double life ending up out of control murderers. Their crime sprees seemingly senseless other than because they can.

Where this differs however is that one of the three killers is a girl, a girl who seems to get as much of a thrill of violating naked women as the males do in a psychosexual manner.

The police led by Inspector Muzi (Jean-Pierre Sebagh) are seemingly powerless against the wealth on the side of these ruthless criminals.

Like Rabid Dogs is pretty much summed up by it's title. It's a violent, harrowing film and serves up the exploitation in spades. I hadn't seen this before and i loved it.

Based on the two films i've seen Arrow's Years of Lead box set is a highly recommended release.

Covert Action. 1988.

A decorated soldier Frank White is on trial for the death of a foreign diplomat at the U.N. building in Washington and tries to clear his name with the help of a C.I.A. operative.

Very draw back to the 80s where the soundtrack to this was used for a trailer to another film made by J. Christian Ingvordsen who co-wrote, directed and starred in. This was a decent action thriller but the acting outside the court room is a bit laughable but the cast do try to make it more tense in the court room involving some flash backs sequences. This isn't a big budget film but has it's moments of being good.

Paper Bullets. 1999.

After a gunman opens fire on a room full of police officers, Detective John Rourke is assigned a new partner and discovers that there is cover up and corruption in the department.

James Russo plays the former alcoholic Rourke who is having family problems and is teamed with Jeff Wincott after his fellow officers are gunned down in a hit orchestrated by a businessman. This seemed to start off decently then goes off the rails a bit then back on again. Even though Jeff Wincott is in this he doesn't show his fighting skills except throwing a few punches. Decent enough but not really great even though Ernie Hudson is in this he doesn't have much screen time.

Milano calibro 9 (1972)

A Poliziottesco directed by Fernando Di Leo, starring Gastone Moschin as a Statham look-a-like small time crook released from prison but immediately harassed by his old mob associates until he goes back to work for them.

Caliber 9, as it's known by it's English title is quite a slow moving example of what is a rather lively crime genre. It's really well acted by Moschin as the jaded con as well as Philippe Leroy as his mate. Although Mario Adorf pretty much shouts his way through the film and does grate quite a bit. Where it stumbles a bit are some lengthy dialogue scenes which go pretty much nowhere other than showcasing Frank Wolff as the aggressive police commissioner and Luigi Pistilli as his number two. Wolff grates more than Adorf and the usually excellent Pistilli looks bored by it all.

On the whole Milano Caliber 9 is an enjoyable character driven crime movie thanks to excellent performances by Moschin and Leroy.

Instant Justice. 1986.

Scott a decorated marine travels to Madrid to visit his sister, when he arrives Scott is informed of her death and finds out what happened to her.

Michael Pare stars as Scott Youngblood who teams up with a man who seems to know what happened and form a unlikely duo for them both to get revenge on a pimp/drug lord who seems to have a clean slate with the police. Charles Napier plays the General of the U.S. Embassy who seems to have his hands tied on a Foreign Soil. Tawny Kitaen plays the Call Girl who ends up helping the duo in their act of revenge, the acting isn't the best, but there is a good amount of action and laughs.

The Initiation (1984)

Distinctly average slasher film of two halves that begins with all the boring clinic stuff about dreams and nightmares that you want to fast forward through in Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street before remembering it's supposed to be a slasher film during it's second half as the action moves to a posh multistorey shopping outlet with a killer on the loose, one or two fun kill scenes and a decent twist ending.

Oasis of The Zombies. 1982.

An expedition team are on the hunt for lost gold that was hidden by the Nazi's during WWII and come across a horde of zombies that are protecting the gold.

Is it just me or did Jess Franco really not care about making this film? This is not his best movie, Even the zombies look like they are fed up, the actors must have been thinking that this must be their lowest point of no return in life. Some parts the dubbing seems to be out of sync and the dialogue has a few added in laughs. If you want a zombie film with decent Nazi zombie's you be better watching Dead Snow or Shock Waves.

You're right in that it's rubbish, looking and sounding like a film made by amateurs with no money. It's even worse than Jean Rollin and Julian de Laserna's Zombie Lake
