30 Days of Unseen Horror

Day 3

22130-the-brainiac-0-230-0-345-crop.jpg

The year is 1661 Mexico and Baron Vitelius of Astara had been charged by the Holy Inquisition for many deeds including the use of magic and the seducing of young woman and using dead bodies in a ritual to try and see In to the future amoung other crimes. He is sentanced to torment and torture but no matter how brutal the torture he laughs and welcomes more. Losing their patients the Holy Inquisition decide to burn the Baron alive but while at the stake the Baron vows to return and wipe out the bloodlines of the people responsible for his death . The year is 1961 and the Baron returns when a meteor crashes to earth and he emerges but he isn't a normal man underneath his human form hides a hideous creature that feeds on brains. The Baron organises a party so he can invite the decents of the men who put him to death so he can get to know them and pick them off one by one there after.

I loved the imagery at the start of the film the hooded inquisition members and the burning at the stake are all very strong scenes so I was a little disappointed that the rest of the film wasn't based in that time period but it wasn't a big deal in the end. The creature is great it just has so much going on from the pulsating head the pointy nose and the snake like tongue plus these crazy hands which look like they have suckers on the ends of the fingers it's quite a sight.

The whole thing moves at a great pace but sadly it's over before you know where you are running at only 77 minutes I would of loved if it had been longer I really wanted more at the end not that I felt short changed or it ended suddenly it was just a fun time that i didn't want to end.

The ending had me laughing loudly not in a bad way but in an awesome way I loved it and when you see it you will understand

This is one of the films in the Mexico Macabre Boxset from Indicator which I only have one film left to watch from the set which I will be watching this month. So happy I picked it up.

Hell House LLC II. 2018.

Eight years after the tragedy of the opening night at the Hell House haunted tour, a journalist Jessica Fox is convinced that there is secrets hidden, with a small team assembled, they venture into the house unaware what awaits them.

This instalment I still have a love/hate for it, yes in the studio scenes everyone seems to go a bit OTT with the acting, in the house itself it's not too bad except for the medium guy who seems to want be the centre of attention and the camera has to be on me, which is partially decent written for the character. The jump scares are far in few but certainly built up with the tension of running behind another person and not knowing what is behind every corner.

The Prophecy (1995)

Elias Koteas plays a detective on a murder case which leads him along with a teacher (Virginia Madsen) on a quest to save the life of a young Native American girl around whom a civil war in heaven breaks out with the Angel Gabriel (Christopher Walken) on Earth and out to claim her soul.

Despite the prophecies of the Book of Revelations about a civil war in heaven being fought out on Earth The Prophecy is a fairly un-apocalyptic tale instead playing out more as a character piece as we see Christopher Walken in typical crazed fashion going about his murderous business until his boss, Lucifer, (A cool Viggo Mortensen) arrives to put an end to it all.

As a film which went straight to video in the UK The Prophecy has an exceptional cast with Eric Stoltz, Amanda Plummer (Excellent when possessed) and Adam Goldberg also appearing. Director Gregory Widen keeps the pace at a relentless level and the script features some glorious dialogue "I'm an angel. I kill firstborns while their mamas watch" - Walken obviously - as well as some brutal violence. Not only is it an urban detective horror story in the LA streets it also delves into Native American lore in it's final third which produces a well thought out if surprising finale.

Inventive, witty, original. The Prophecy has long been a favourite of mine.

The Wolf Man (1941)

"The way you walked was thorny though no fault of your own, but as the rain enters the soil, the river enters the sea, so tears run to a predestined end. Now you will have peace for eternity."

Looks amazing on the 4k disc by the way

Re: The Prophecy ...isn't that a cut down version of a thing called In God's Name originally?
Great fun nonetheless ...

Friend Request (2016, Simon Verhoeven)

Popular girl "befriends" a loner. Loner becomes clingy.
Single White Female it isn't.
Tangentially folk horror cough
Held my attention (did jump once ... it's been a while)
Slightly poor ending.
Must try harder!

I haven't picked up the 2nd set yet, hoping it'll be on offer at some point, I got the 1st one for like £20 in a sale.

I almost watched The Wolf Man myself last night. I went with the final three episodes of season two of Penny Dreadful - excellent by the way - which revealed Josh Hartnett as a certain Lycan (We knew this anyway) by the name of Lawrence Talbot rather than Chandler which he'd been using up to the season two finale. So then decided i wanted a break from wolf men.

By the way it was great to see Rory Kinnear's 'creature' (who looks quite like De Niro in the Brannagh film) continuously smash conniving David Haig's head into the wax works cellar wall until his jaw broke off.

Every time someone mentions Penny Dreadful it reminds me of one of Patti Smith's books where she talks in length about how she was on tour in Europe and she watched all of Penny Dreadful in the hotel while she was in London and when she got back to America she bought the DVDs. I've never seen it myself. Will check it out though at some point.
