Default The Quentin Tarantino Thread

there seems to be a love/hate thing surrounding the work of Quentin Tarantino on the labs, someone referred to him as a hack and someone called him very hollywood but still one of us...

For me, if it wasn't for QT then i wouldn't be here on the labs, because watching his films and his enthusiasm for cult movies that i decided to search out films that i never new existed. From Blaxsploitation to French New wave etc...

So if you love his work or hate his stuff here is the place to talk everything Tarantino...

Quentin Tarantino is an untalented Director with no originality as every film he's directed are rip-offs of other films, even Pulp Fiction's ezekiel speech is directly nicked ftom a Sonny Chiba Street Fighter film. The only remotely original film he's directed is Jackie Brown and that's based on a novel.

Can't agree at all! Reservoir Dogs was one of the most explosive feature film debuts of all-time and Inglorious Basterds is an absolute masterpiece. As for his plaguerism, in the world of horror/action/crime etc, booms have always followed a successful film which everyone then tries to capitalise on in their own way. He's not writing Shakespeare and he's not David Lean. He makes movies that are entertainment and he's just putting his own take on movies he loves. As a director/writer/producer, he's highly skilled in his camera work, dialogue, music, casting.. the only thing I don't like him as is an actor!

Yes, I'm a Tarantino fan.

Resevoir Dogs isn't original as it's a direct rip-off of the Chow Yun Fat film City on Fire.

He wears his influences on his sleeve for sure but to call anything he does a plain rip-off seems a bit unjust to me. I don't dislike anything he's directed at all and, if anything, just wish he would direct more regularly.

Oh, and Gojirosan, regarding Natural Born Killers Tarantino has said that Stone amended his original script so much that he doesn't really feel he had much to do with it. Watching the film it's quite clear all of the choices are that of the director and not the scriptwriter I think, and I don't even think Tarantino watched the full film out of disgust.

Yeah, I think that's right when I think back it's a very Stone film.

it's not as if that is secret, QT himself has gone on record as saying that City On fire was a direct influence on Reservoir dogs.

I have been a Tarantino fan since about 1996 when I first saw Pulp Fiction. Being 14 I obviously thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen (and I still watch it quite regularly now). I saw Reservoir Dogs about a year later and was equally blown away.

Ever since then I have seen everything he's done theatrically (Jackie Brown was the first 15 I saw at the cinema, but I see my DVD is rated as 18 which is weird), and liked all of it, yes even Death Proof. In fact the big crash sequence with Stunt Man Mike and the first set of girls is one of my favourite scenes he’s ever directed. The music and timing is just so perfect it's hard not to love, plus I really enjoy the hell out of the end car sequence.

Even though I voted for Pulp Fiction on the poll I think my favourite thing Tarantino has written is True Romance. It's just so hard not to like. All the characters are perfectly cast, right down to Brad Pitts cameo as a stoner. There are so many memorable scenes: Drexel at his club, the Hopper/Walkin Scene, the shoot out at the hotel. I cant see how any cult film fan couldn't love this film. Even if the plot line of comic book/film nerd meets hooker with the heart of gold is obviously Tarantino’s personal wet dream.

The only thing that has a slightly annoyed me about Tarantino is that he's ruined some of my fun when it comes to collecting films. Just before Kill Bill came out I was quite happy researching Samurai films, finding DVDs in second hand shops and generally just being a cult film collector. Suddenly [b]Kill Bill[/]b arrives on the scene (and it was awesome and everything) and makes everyone’s a Samurai fan, and you can buy Zatochi box sets and Lady Snowblood collections in HMV. It's not like I'm some kind of snob who thinks films should be only available to a certain sub set of second hand shop, eBay dwelling geeks. It just ruined a little bit of the fun for me. The same thing happened to a lesser extent with Grindhouse.

As far as the whole, did he rip all his stuff off debate goes, its never really bothered me. The films are enjoyable, and different enough to be more that just a cut and paste job.

P.S. After re-reading that post I guess I should christen my self a Tarantino Fanboy.

Have you come across the warner R2 release of King Boxer? It has a cracking commentary by QT.

C'mon...he was great in From Dusk Til Dawn.

I love his films. As far as plagerism...I've always seen it as homage.
