I see! I like that old fashioned stage acting, i'm still sure Rigby called him a hack though I'll have to check back but i'm on the 1950s now

Oh, he absolutely did - but he now takes that back, having finally seen the films in decent copies. In fact, he enjoyed recording the commentary for Crimes at the Dark House so much that he offered to do The Face at the Window as well (both times with regular commentary partner Kevin Lyons), an offer that we were only too happy to take him up on.

There's a great bit in one of the Kim Newman commentaries in which he says that he thinks that the best Tod Slaughter performance is probably in The Ticket of Leave Man, but...

I think if you're a connoisseur, you don't want the best Tod Slaughter acting, you want the most. And I think you get that probably in Crimes at the Dark House, which is a film that managed to take the most hideously appalling person in English literature and make him worse in the film!

'An American Tragedy' (1931) - Pre-order available at PowerHouse Films direct - £15:99

Release date: December 11

"In the middle of his classic series of collaborations with Marlene Dietrich, Josef von Sternberg substituted the iconic German star with Phillips Holmes (The Criminal Code) and Sylvia Sidney (You and Me) to make An American Tragedy, a shocking tale of crime and punishment.

Clyde (Holmes), a poor garment worker with a past he wishes to forget, has a shot at the good life when he meets heiress Sondra (Frances Dee). But when his clandestine girlfriend Roberta (Sidney) announces she is pregnant, Clyde considers drastic actions in order to preserve his dream of affluence.

Based on the novel by Theodore Dreiser (which would later be adapted as A Place in the Sun, starring Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor), and inspired by a notorious real-life murder case, An American Tragedy is a searing indictment of the American dream."

  • 2019 restoration from a 4K scan

I have a mild interest in Honor Amongst Lovers and Desire. But it is only mild.
