The Howling is a film I really want to like because I love most of Joe Dante's films and keep telling myself it is something which fails to resonate because An American Werewolf in London is better and doesn't allow me to see Dante's film on its own merits, but it could just be because The Howling is simply average-to-good whereas John Landis's movie is great.

Bollocks!
The Howling is a great movie as well.

AWIL will always be king of the Lycanthrope movies, but The Howling is way above 'average-to-good'!

I'm sure it is, but I just find it a hard film to love because it doesn't have the same emotional attachment with any of the main characters that my favourite werewolf films (The Wolf Man, Curse of the Werewolf, An American Werewolf in London etc.) do.

It's undoubtedly overdue another watch, which I'll try and remedy this coming week.

Default howlers

I'll always like the howling but 2 bits that make me wince, the animated werewolf sequence and the sad ending is blunted by the fact she seems to have turned into a yorkshire terrier , the best character in it is John Carradine's sad old werewolf.
American werewolf is one of the greatest horrors made, it perfectly blends horror, tragedy, romance and a very british dark sense of humour . I once had a big row with some idiot who thought dog soldiers was a superior film.

Dog Soldiers is a great film, but American Werewolf is the modern-day werewolf film! Who can argue with dialogue like - "A naked American man stole my balloons!"

As for the Howling debate. I'm rather fond of the original bar the ridiculous ending where she turns into a Chihuahua. It has a certain atmosphere to it and was a VHS favourite back in the day.
keirarts and nosferatu42 like this.

Howling 2 is also able to boast of having Oz in its cast, although I do think they've missed a trick but not including Dennis and Neville: three hairy bricklayers with Geordie howls would have been the icing on the cake...
