It's interesting that it hasn't done as well (The Last Jedi) in it's opening 11 day period as The Force Awakens. In fact almost two hundred million less in the US.

$397,271,356 compared to $571,420,943

Despite all the bad word of mouth which a lot here suggest is mere trolling, the box office figures don't lie.

It's still doing very well, but not as well as Disney probably hoped.

Disney will be looking toward the Chinese market to make up the deficit. Disney have done well in the past with films that haven't reached the full potential at the US Box Office in the past. Add to that the endless merchandise and usual add on's with TV showings and on-demand, Disney will have a rather nice end result. All this could be applied to Solo as well. When the film comes out in 2018. The status quo with Star Wars won't change one bit.

It'll be interesting to see what impact the school holidays have on the box office, so this fortnight when there are multiple showings every day at all multiplexes (at least the ones near me) will be telling.

In terms of the overall story, it makes sense for R2-D2 to play a small role because it is (like C-3PO) predominantly with Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and Darth Vader and not Poe, Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren, characters whose interactions and adventures are now linked with BB-8.

R2-D2 is still linked to the older characters, but it's impossible to continue because Kenny Baker, the actor is sadly dead, as is Carrie Fisher and the Han Solo character. If the torch has to be passed, now seems a good a time as any.

Surely any actor that would fit inside R2's casing could pull it off. It's not like electronic beeps are tough speaking parts.

I have to admit i'm really bored of this Star Wars debate now. I used to love it as a child and collected everything i could but as mentioned previously was well over it by the time i left school. I didn't buy any novels, reference books, action figures or any other merch after Jedi and held no interest in the prequels other than seeing the films themselves.

I won't be seeing the film until it's out on dvd probably Easter so will leave the chat to those who have.

..........................

Doesn't anyone discuss gialli round here anymore?

Any chance we could coax Inspector Tanzi back to the forum?

I bet the idea is to phase out the use of the droids, Chewbacca etc as they will all be Lucas film property and royalties will have to be given to George. However new creations like BB-8 (Remote control toys ago-go) will be completely Disney owned. R2D2, Luke Skywalker will all be Lucas trademarks and phased out asap.
There's no royalties to be paid. Lucas sold Star Wars outright. If Disney feels inclined, they can use already established characters without any financial consequences.

About the Jedi being the worst part of Star Wars - yeah, exactly. The original trilogy had us believe it was all black and white with the Jedi’s back-story being a tale of heroic warrior monks, but then the prequels showed us how hypocritical and self-righteous the Jedi Order could be, and if I’m remembering correctly, there was even stuff about this in the old EU. The Last Jedi is a commentary on this - the hypocrisy of good vs. evil that says a big **** you to the hero myth. Luke tells Rey this, when explaining how Darth Sidious rose to power, and how his father became Darth Vader. Most of the film’s criticisms have been aimed at what actually makes it great.
