David Cronenberg making a TV series for Netflix Consumed based on a novel. https://thefilmstage.com/news/david-...ovel-consumed/ David Cronenberg, God love him, sounded content with retirement in a recent interview with the Globe and Mail. “If this is it for the so-called Cronenberg canon, then so be it. You can’t worry about legacy” is more or less the most definitive one can get, but it wasn’t for lack of trying — and if he’s going to the well a little bit in getting something new made, so be it. The best shot-reverse dynamic can’t direct itself. Presenting the 4K Crash restoration at Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinema, Cronenberg announced he was at work on a Netflix mini-series adaptation of Consumed, his 2014 novel about a camera-obsessed couple who discover a North Korean plot at world domination centered on planting bugs in women’s breasts… something like that. I wrote about it in 2014 and was a bit nonplussed by the whole endeavor, finding it maybe not the greatest use of his time but nevertheless a fascinating window into Cronenberg’s visual processing of the world around him. It sometimes played like the template for a more expansive, stimulating project, and, well, here we are. [World of Reel] For a preview of what Consumed may hold, I highly recommend Cronenberg’s short The Nest, created in promotion of Consumed. A positively dread-inducing bit of work that, with luck, portends what’s next. (That's in the link) For posterity’s sake, the short and book’s official synopsis: Stylish and camera-obsessed, Naomi and Nathan thrive on the yellow journalism of the social-media age. They are lovers and competitors—nomadic freelancers in pursuit of sensation and depravity, encountering each other only in airport hotels and browser windows. Naomi finds herself drawn to the headlines surrounding Celestine and Aristide Arosteguy, Marxist philosophers and sexual libertines. Celestine has been found dead and mutilated in her Paris apartment. Aristide has disappeared. Police suspect him of killing her and consuming parts of her body. With the help of an eccentric graduate student named Herve Blomqvist, Naomi sets off in pursuit of Aristide. As she delves deeper into Celestine and Aristide’s lives, disturbing details emerge about their sex life—which included trysts with Herve and others. Can Naomi trust Herve to help her? Nathan, meanwhile, is in Budapest photographing the controversial work of an unlicensed surgeon named Zoltán Molnar, once sought by Interpol for organ trafficking. After sleeping with one of Molnar’s patients, Nathan contracts a rare STD called Roiphe’s. Nathan then travels to Toronto, determined to meet the man who discovered the syndrome. Dr. Barry Roiphe, Nathan learns, now studies his own adult daughter, whose bizarre behavior masks a devastating secret. These parallel narratives become entwined in a gripping, dreamlike plot that involves geopolitics, 3-D printing, North Korea, the Cannes Film Festival, cancer, and, in an incredible number of varieties, sex. “Consumed” is an exuberant, provocative debut novel from one of the world’s leading film directors. |

https://www.ihorror.com/the-purge-se...the-franchise/ ‘The Purge’ Season Two is Bringing a New Perspective to the Franchise Fans of the The Purge will have something different to tune in for in season two of the series based on the popular franchise. According to Entertainment Weekly, rather than focusing on the events of Purge night, the new season will step outside the actual event to show what happens the rest of the year as citizens deal with the fallout of the violent holiday. Derek Luke (Glory Road) and Paola Nunez (The Son) will star as Marcus Moore and Esme Carmona, both of whom work for the New Founding Fathers of America. After an attempt on his life when someone breaks into his home on Purge Night, Marcus spends his time attempting to find out who his attacker was in an effort to stave off another attack when the holiday rolls around again. Esme, meanwhile, is a true believer who works within the command center on Purge Night but she soon begins to believe that the people in whom she’s put her faith are not what they seem to be. The show will also focus on Max Martini as a man who plans a heist that goes wrong during Purge night and Joel Allen as a fraternity member named Ben who finds himself on the receiving end of violence during the Purge which continues to take its toll on him, mentally, long after the event is over. It will certainly be a different perspective on the Purge than we’ve seen before and could make for some very interesting television when the new season begins on October 15, 2019 on USA Network. What do you think? Does seeing this side of The Purge intrigue you? Last edited by gag; 15th October 2019 at 09:10 PM. |

It's times like this when I wish I still had access to a television set "QUICK GET ON THE TELLING BONE EVERYONE! Starting Saturday 2 November at 3:30pm on Talking Pictures TV and continuing every Sat / Sun at 3:30pm CATWEAZLE (1970-72) created by Richard Carpenter. The popular and much loved children’s television series Catweazle first appeared on our screens in 1970. Geoffrey Bayldon was perfectly cast as the eccentric 11th Century wizard who accidentally travels through time to 1969 England. Here he befriends a red-headed boy, Edward Bennett – nicknamed ‘Carrot’ – who tries to help him return to his own time, whilst hiding him from his father. Catweazle hides out in an old water tower that he calls Castle Saburac, with his ‘familiar,’ a toad called Touchwood. The wizard sees much of our modern world as forms of magic – he calls the telephone, the ‘telling-bone’ and electricity is christened as ‘elek-trickery.’ The series – which lasted for 26 episodes over 2 series – also saw several famous names making guest appearances including Hattie Jacques, Peter Butterworth, Elspet Grey, John Junkin, Bill Owen and Peter Sallis, to name a mere handful."

Starts Friday 8 November at 9pm on Talking Pictures TV, continuing every Friday at 9pm. HAZELL (1978-79), created by Gordon Williams and Terry Venables. "Originally a series of books written by journalist Gordon Williams and former footballer turner manager Terry Venables under the pen name of P. B. Yuill, Thames Television turned the Sam Spade parody character into a younger version of the private eye for the small screen. It was a huge hit for Nicholas Ball, who is best remembered for his work on this series. The series ran for 2 series, 22 episodes and came with a theme tune by Andy Mackay. Added lyrics where provided by Judy Forrest for the end credits which gave vocalist Maggie Bell a minor hit. As with most series of this kind, it attracted many guest stars including Dana Gillespie, Pat Heywood, Vicki Hodge, Michael Elphick, Suzan Farmer, Gretchen Franklin and Jane Asher."

October 31st - BBC2 - 2:55pm - 4:30pm - King Kong https://www.radiotimes.com/film/jsk7rv/king-kong/ "Arguably the monster movie of all time, this abiding take on Beauty and the Beast has a mythic power that belies its years. At its heart is the amazing ape (and dinosaur) animation of Willis O'Brien, his cutting-edge model work the CGI of its day, but it's the tragic story that stays etched on the memory. Robert Armstrong's Hollywood film-maker imperils starlet Fay Wray on a prehistoric island in his bid to turn a local legend into a hit on celluloid. Taking the giant gorilla Kong back to civilisation for entrepreneurial gain is bad for all concerned, not least the captive creature who ends up on top of the Empire State Building in one of cinema's greatest climaxes. This thrilling adventure with a good heart offers an early eco-message. Summary A film producer and his crew visit a remote island where they encounter a 50ft gorilla which takes a shine to their leading lady. When they decide to take it back to America, they fail to foresee the inevitable havoc as the gigantic ape runs amok in New York. Fantasy, starring Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong and Bruce Cabot."
