I'd say from 2 on the look (cinematography) of the films improves greatly, both 2 and 3 are a bit different but well worth watching,4 wasn't supposed to be a Police Story sequel originally and it shows but there's still fun to be had.
I saw First Strike at the cinema.

I wonder which version you watched as the HK versions differ from the US/international ones?

Police Story 3 has always been my favourite of the 5 films. I'm currently waiting for my uncut DVD from China to arrive and it'll be the first time I've seen the full version and with an anamorphic transfer, up to now I've only seen the UK VHS copy. Excited to say the least. Hopefully it comes tomorrow as I'm off work with a back injury and would love to have a Policy Story filmathon all day

Let us all know what the image quality is like when you have a chance to take a look at the DVD.

i wasn't overly impressed with the pic quality TBH. It seemed very dark, one scene I couldn't see peoples faces, but that could have been the way it was shot. I also noticed some pixelation .

However, these things didn't ruin my enjoyment the film over all.

Actually I just stuck the disk in my mac to check it again and they quality looks even worse (watched in on PS3 earlier and it probably upscaled it a bit). Looks quite heavily compressed to me, although I don't claim to be an expert on these things.

Oh well, still it's only this or the boxset release that have the anamorphic uncut version so it'll have to do until a multi region or Region B Blu-ray release becomes available.

We're obviously dealing with an older Chan in NPS but he still proves there's life in the old dragon yet and the film boasts better production values with a slicker look imo. The performances are more finely-tuned too. It's also nice to see The Chanster showing his scarcely-seen dramatic side playing a once respected cop who has fallen from grace and landed in a bottle of booze.

The first two PS classics are driven more by action than anything else (there's more fights in these entries and they're more varied than in NPS.) and Chan's old school outings are always going to be preferable to his latter day efforts. But NPS holds up very well in the face of the vintage greats and remains The Chanster's best movie in years imo.

Couldn't agree more, it's about time he got back to doing some "classic" style Jackie Chan films too. I know he's meant to be working on Armour of God 3 but that's been in the pipeline for years and not much progress has happened.
