The narration does end – you just have to wait a while!

It must be a subjective thing because I generally like films with voice-overs, whether it's the two you mentioned, A Scanner Darkly, A Clockwork Orange, Sunset Boulevard, Fight Club, or, most recently, Deadpool 2.

If you haven't seen either Onibaba or Kwaidan, then you should add them to your wish list ASAP. Japanese horror cinema didn't begin with Ringu!

Top 10 Horror Films released in 1964

The Black Torment*
Blood and Black Lace
The Long Hair of Death
The Masque of the Red Death
Witchcraft
Devil Doll
The Last Man on Earth
At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul
The Tomb of Ligeia
Cave of the Living Dead

Quite a thin year in terms of what i would call classics. Aside from the top four the rest are pretty interchangeable.

i don't have a problem with a bit of narration, but it did seem to go on for ages in that film. and just when you thought it had stopped it started up again.

and i can't comment at all on those Japanese films. never seen them, sorry.

Kwaidan is perhaps a bit of a cheat because it was apparently premiered at Toho on December 29, 1974 and went on general release in most territories in 1975, but it is a great anthology movie. Onibaba is definitely a 1974 film and one of the most intense and scariest (if you are in the right mood) horror films ever made. Both come highly recommended from me and, looking at his list, from bizarre_eye.

I scoff at your 'thin'!

You need to check out Onibaba despite your indifference towards Japanese cinema
