Cult director Kevin Smith's second film, that is actually a prequel to his first, the previous years Clerks.

Completely different in style to the talky but hilarious Clerks, Mallrats goes for a more slapstick approach which thanks to Smiths individual style is just as funny, mainly due to the antics of the deadly duo Jay and Silent Bob.

There are many references to characters from Smith's world of View Askew (his production company) both from Clerks and films yet to be made at the time, and many of his regular go to actors pop up here such as Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Brian O' Halloran and Jason Lee. Whilst a bigger budget meant star names like Shannen Doherty, Michael Rooker, Clair Forlani and Stan Lee were also on board.

Crackling with pop culture dialogue although not as good as Clerks, Mallrats is still a very good film and a regular in my dvd player.
I've had the 3 disc dvd set of Clerks for years and its yet to get near my player. I probably should rectify that soon. In fact I've not seen much Kevin Smith at all. Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and the slightly different Red State. Given they're all brilliant i really need to get things sorted.

Definitely. You should watch Clerks, Clerks II, Mallrats and my favourite of them all Chasing Amy.

I haven't seen the much maligned Jersey Girl. I didn't rate Red State much either. The other two are brilliant.

A couple of other recommendations - not Smith films but similar - Empire Records and Comic Book Villains.

I really liked Jersey Girl. My dad had only been gone about a fortnight and something about the relationship between Ben Afflecks character and his dad, played by the brilliant George Carlin had me crying like a baby. I also enjoyed Red State, though i didn't cry . I have seen Empire Records about a hundred years ago but can't remember a damn thing about it.

Watch Clerks, Mallrats and then Chasing Amy (which I also think is is best film) as they are the three which constitute the original triptych in the 'View Askewniverse'. Follow those with Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and then Clerks II because I find they work better in release order. Watching them in a short space of time well allow you to spot the references to events in other films and recurrence of characters and locations.

I posted these mini-reviews for every (up until that point) Kevin Smith movie, so no Tusk on there, I watched them all in a week.

‎Kevin Smith Project, a list of films by JustinMc • Letterboxd

Chasing Amy is my favourite too, but I love them all for different reasons, as you'll see though I didn't like Cop Out AT ALL...

I'm really looking forward to Yoga Hosers as it seems to be real Kevin Smith again.

Great reviews. I love this scene you mentioned:

Also, it's funny how the dialogue maybe 15 years old, but this line is still relevant:
"The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another."

Finally, I will never tire of this scene:

I feel like watching them all (excluding Cop Out) again very shortly, I can't believe it was 3 years ago I did that it seems like yesterday

Paper Towns (2015, Jake Schreier)
Apparently the popular kids at school had feelings too......a film I grew to hate, much like The Spectacular Now cough. Both based on novels. May put me off reading haha.
