A Date for Mad Mary

Sweet and occasionally very funny lesbian coming out story from Ireland. Mary, a troubled woman in her early 20s is released from prison for assault and has to find a date for her best friend's wedding. Seana Kerslake is great as Mary, balancing an outer toughness with a fragile inner life as events spiral out of her control with an almost blank expression on her face for most of the film but when she allows happiness into her life, her face and expressions will melt your heart. Good stuff.

Strike Commando

Fantastic 'Namsploitation flick that is just a lot of fun and contains an excellent montage of various tortures heaped on the hero by the baddies that plays like a demented Japanese game show. Recommended.

Ah censors. How they think up such distinctions is a sure sign of lunacy in my book.

Not Another Happy Ending. Karen Gillan is an author whose first quasi-autobiographical book is a massive hit. Her life seems to be finally coming together, but when she gets writer's block on her second, her publisher decides she can't write when she's happy, so sets out to ruin her life and make her miserable again! This Scottish rom-com is nothing particularly astounding, but is pretty watchable and entertaining, bouyed enormously by our Kazza's sheer presence and charisma.

Maroc 7 (1967)

Lavish 60's crime drama showcasing Moroccan locations as exotic as the many women who model in them. Gene Barry investigates Cyd Charisse and her model agency to try and break an international fraud operation.

Whilst the plot is slight and the whole thing is typical style over substance 60's escapism there's still entertainment to be found. Barry comes across more Dean Martin than Sean Connery, although his fight to the death in a flooded temple with Leslie Phillips (yes, that Leslie Phillips) is pure Bond thuggery.

Network's dvd print positively sparkles.
