City Under the Sea (1965)

Released Stateside as War Gods of the Deep, City Under the Sea is one of those AIP productions that straddles genres. Based very loosely on Poe's poem The City in the Sea, yet it's certainly more fantasy than it is horror and has a real Jules Verne steam punk vibe to it.

Directed by the great Jacques Tourneur, City Under the Sea is a moderately pacy affair with some terrific underwater filming. Vincent Price is excellent as always, Tab Hunter is a little stiff around the edges but makes for a decent-ish hero and Susan Hart does the eye candy in peril part rather well. City Under the Sea is a worthy effort and sits proudly, at least with me, in the AIP/ Poe/ Price arsenal of chillers.

While never be as classic as TCM or some of his other films, its a bit week in comparison but still a reasonable watch ..

For me what is the best Star Trek movies (undiscovered country ) to one the worst (the final frontier) I still rate it higher than nemesis despite its flaws.

I've just watched The Handmaiden. Favourite film of the year hands down. I rented it so I just ordered the special edition from Amazon, I can't wait to watch the extended version.

It's that good? I love Park Chan-wook's films but, aside from limited editions, very rarely spend £15 on a blind buy.

I think if you've enjoyed his previous films, specifically Stoker you will definitely enjoy this one. Special Edition version is £12.50 currently but at least rent it out. Don't read any detailed reviews. Going in without knowing what's going to happen will really enhance your enjoyment.

I saw it's set in Korea, so I'm surprised by the "specifically Stoker" comment – is it more in common with that than his Korean films (the 'Vengeance' trilogy, Thirst, I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay)?

Yes, it felt more like Stoker than the others. Although set in 1930s Korea and spoken in Korean and Japanese, it has a similar feeling. I guess that sort of sense that something underneath it all is just not right.

It sounds superb and something I would really enjoy. If I didn't have such a huge number of unwatched discs I would buy it straight away, but it'll probably have to wait until next month.
