I also really like it and rate it very highly. It isn't quite as intense as Inside, but the atmosphere and escalating tension, combined with a really interesting story, makes for great viewing.

Few recent watches haven't been films, but documentaries all revolving around the creation of albums, trying to get inspired for future projects in the studio

Love how Kirk is always trying to stop James and Lars from being complete assholes

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lzxgxU8njn...h+Magnetic.jpg

2 hour documentary on the making of Death Magnetic, once again I feel sorry for Kirk as Lars tells him how to play an instrument he can't play himself. If it was me, I'd tell him to **** off back to Denmark

Wish they'd do one for In Utero because I wanna know how the Hell they got the drums to sound so Goddamn awesome!

Not a documentary as such, but it does contain fake footage of the creation of Dark Side of the Moon, plus the version of Echoes is phenomenal on this

Rush Beyond the Lighted Stage is a fantastic documentary Rik. If you like Rush that is

Yeah, I heard that the blu rays are grain free and do not look like the gritty films they are supposed to be. Stick with the DVDs is the word !
I have A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More on 2 disc special edition DVD and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly on single disc as I wanted the original cut instead of the extended version. All look great upscaled on my blu ray player. No need to upgrade :yo:

I've not seen that one yet, my guitar sparring partner in my main band is a huge fan and he's forever telling me to watch it, I'll have to see if he'll let me borrow it.

Yeah, that's how I feel about Maiden. Incedently, we sometimes "play" Spirit of Radio at gigs, I use the term play very loosely

Yeah i agree about Maiden in interviews it seems like they are just a few lads in a band not the biggest metal band of all time.

Yes Livid is highly recommended!
The "doll girl" scene is very creepy! If you seen it you will know what I mean! :lol

I watched Tower Block tonight, average Brit flick about a bunch of council flat tenants who wont leave a tower block of flats that are going to be demolished. A sniper then starts to shoot people through windows and rest of the movie is the people trying to get out. I wont spoil the reason for the sniper for those who want to see it. Its not great but had a interesting story that could have been done better. I did enjoy the 80 mins of it but I doubt many people will. Main strength lies in Jack O'Connell's acting, as always he is brilliant! He is one of the best young Brit actors out there. Main issue is the typecasting he gets with most roles playing a similar "thug" character! Let him shine in a different kind of role I say.

Overhead mics, mic both sides of the kick with stereo mics and double mic the snare. Add ambient mics "audience" side and wah lah! That's how he set up David Lovering on Surfer Rosa and Grohl on on In Utero.

You need a drummer who can hit solid and HARD though!

There's a whole bunch of diagrams and stuff kicking round online about Albini's setups, especially since he built his own studio.

Last time I looked it up online I read they had something like 30 mics on the kit! I usually use 7 or 8 depending on the size of the kit, but I've managed to make a crappy kit sound good using 3 mics, one of which I made myself from an old speaker, Pro Tools is good for turd polishing

ArgentoFan1987 4th February 2013 04:25 AM

Just finished watching Surf Nazis Must Die after a third attempt. It's one of the worst films I've seen in a LONG time and not even in a 'so bad it's good' kind of way, it's just ****ing terrible! Nothing happens until the past fifteen minutes and even then it's just a bunch of terrible acting and bad action scene.

How many mics do you think Mooney would have used on this kit?

Steve Albini is incredible. The albums he engineers always have an excellent sound.

Yeah, I'm getting the separate tracks from the original recordings from In Utero in a week or so to do my own mix on, I can't wait to tackle them (also gonna have a go at Bohemian Rhapsody and a Bob Marley track too :woot:)

A word of warning about this one

Do NOT go into it, expecting songs along the lines of 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'The Wall'. It is an EARLY recording of the Floyd, so the music is very psychedelic and experimental

*Note to Rik - I have just noticed that this is 'The Directors Cut'. I have not seen this version, I only know the original release, which was regularly shown on television many years ago, and I maintain is a real snooze-fest. How different is your recommendation to that original release?

Personally, I think it is one of the most boring music things I have ever seen - and, although I am a fan of the band, I find a lot of the early material to be very tedious

It just contains more of the fake Dark Side of the Moon recording footage really.
I like all this early stuff, before Waters turned into the egotistic prick he is today, but I only really concentrate on Gilmour's playing TBH. I would imagine the earlier records are best experienced under the influence of Amsterdam cigarettes.......apparently

Baseball Fury 4th February 2013 12:11 PM

What tracks are you getting, Albini raw files or the Scott Litt tweaked ones?

I've got a copy of Albini's original mix, before the vocals and bass were tweaked and the Scott Litt remixes were done, and it's a really interesting listen. It's a big dirty noise rock sound, kind of like how "I Hate Myself and Want To Die" sounds.

These are the films I saw last week which, again, are mostly Best Picture Oscar winners.

In case the images aren't clear enough, the films are:

Grand Hotel
The Life of Emile Zola
How Green Was My Valley
My Fair Lady
From Here to Eternity
Tom Jones
The Sound of Music
A Man for All Seasons
In the Heat of the Night
Midnight Cowboy
Patton
The French Connection
The Panic in Needle Park*
The Godfather
The Sting
The Godfather: Part II
Lenny*
Rocky
Kramer vs. Kramer
The English Patient
Titanic
Flight*

*Not Best Picture Oscar winners

Prom Night III: The Last Kiss - The already-lacklustre Prom Night franchise takes a turn into the realms of the spoof with this odd entry. It actually surprises me that this isn't up there as a camp classic like Troll 2 or Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 as it really is just a serious of non-sequiters, bad early 90's sfx and dismal performances. Oddly engaging

Switchblade Sisters - top-notch exploitation. Has it all - tough-talking girl gangs, a woman-in-prison scene, an ambush in a roller rink and even veers into blaxploitation. Enjoyed it so much I rewatched it straight after with the Jack Hill and Quentin Tarantino commentary on which was particularly illuminating.

Unknown - Liam Neeson continues his bid for the older man's action hero as a biochemist who after a car crash finds someone appears to have his identity, his wife no longer seems to know who he is, and is pursued by a group of assassins. It's really interesting while the mystery unfolds but as soon as the explanation is given (which works well and isn't disappointing) it loses its way a little

Splice - Adrien Brody and his girlfriend genetically created a new organism using human DNA which they raise as their sort-of daughter. I expected it to be a standard Frankenstein-type film with the creation of the creature followed by masses of death and destruction but it's a lot more complex and dark than that with some pretty creepy and disturbing scenes. Like Unknown, it runs out of steam a little at the end but was a lot better and different than expected

Corman's World - excellent look at the career of Roger Corman and his contribution to independent and exploitation cinema. Wonderful clips and insightful interviews make a truly wonderful viewing experience. And you get to see Jack Nicholson cry for real

Hitch Hike to Hell (1977)

Part of the Harry Novak collection. The film's about a delivery driver who picks up girls hitching rides and then kills and rapes them when he finds out they are running away from their mothers.

The film starts off suitably sleazy, showing in fairly graphic detail the first two kills, but then interest starts to wane as the drivers back story comes to the fore and his work and home life take the place onscreen of any sleazy goings on. A couple of detectives are soon on the case but they are as inept as the film itself.

By the end i was bored to tears, all the nastiness a long distant memory.

Talking of that film, watched Django Unchained last night - thought that was an annoying and unnecessary detail that his wife was called Broomhilda von Shaft  . . .

I've no idea what it is (or isn't) Oscar worthy, but Tom Jones is a brilliant film, worthy of all critical praise it received and awards it received.
