Slipped in just before the finish line -

WISHMASTER – Who could forget this blizzard of splattery silliness from the last years of the nineties? Proof that not everything about that decade was a total yawn. Divoff is the fleshly vessel of a Djinn; Bannister finds out what happens when Djinn grants your wish-essss (actually Reggie’s only in it for a couple of mins, I just like pointing him out). A fast-paced cheap thrill as perky as the best shit ghost rides, and probably plays better now than it did in its day.

EDGE OF SANITY – Anthony Perkins is Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde / Jack The Ripper and seems to have invented crack way before it became Reagan’s pet scourge. 19th cent London is where we’re at, but this is no pea-souper – the director obviously likes Ken Russell and quite often makes things look a bit like a Frankie Goes To Hollywood video. I’d have preferred even more of all that because EOS is ultimately a hack job, it goes for style but it wastes too much time on more ordinary stuff. Perkins is always worth watching, even when he’s trundling along. OK.

THE LEECH – A nice but put-upon priest invites a homeless guy and his other half back to his place when he finds out they’ve got nothing and no one at this most barbaric time of the year. But hang on… is something dark happening that means that people aren’t always what they seem, leading to a possible tables-turned-in-unsuspected-and-messy-ways-including-sex type situation? Watch it if you want to find out. I did, and I liked it, but not a lot. That’s not a reference to anything, but it might’ve helped if the homeless dudes had been played by Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee.

BLOODY MUSCLE BODY BUILDER IN HELL – A Japanese ‘Evil Dead’ fan made this, a 8mm roller coaster set in a haunted house where things are anything but ‘groovy’ for aforementioned bloody muscle body builder and his long suffering girlfriend. An obvious labour of love for you to regard with affection, even though it struggles to get beyond being two people stuck in a room with special effects going on. See, the new year hasn’t even started and I’m already turning into Scrooge.

He Never Died. 2015.

Jack is a loner who does nothing but sleep, play bingo and eat out at his local diner. When a couple of thugs show up at his door, Jack shows he isn't a man to trouble.

Henry Rollins stars as the lead actor in this comedy action horror, he has that 1000 yard stare that means your ass will be handed to you. As the film was going on I thought he was some sort of vampire but turned out he was something...or someone else. This does come with its laughs that never go over the top or spoil the film. From start to finish this was worth watching.

She Never Died. 2020.

Sequel to He Never Died this time Olunike Adeliyi plays the protagonist Lacey who is the friendly killer the police are looking for but swings in the different direction. Peter MacNeill plays the detective hunting a serial killer and Kiana Madeira as the new friend of Lacey.

This had potential to be good but the plot didn't make sense half way through and the laughs are a bit few and missing. The acting is as best it can be, Jason Krawczyk did return to the sequel but as writer only, but think this will be a one watch only for me.

Loved The Seasoning House, Mr.B.

One fantastically brutal exercise in terror. It's one of those i've not returned to in case it didn't have the same impact second time round

I think it's one of those films you can't watch over and over in case it does loose the impact from the first viewing. Sean Pertwee is a great actor and in this he doesn't hold back on his performace and dialogue delivery.

Dog Soldiers (2002)

A platoon of British soldiers on weekend manoeuvres in the Scottish wilds stumble across the scene of a savage wolf attack and end up hiding out in a secluded farm house as they face wave upon wave of Lycan attacks as they try and survive till the dawn.

Neil Marshall's directorial debut is as accomplished as horror gets. It grips from the first scenes and refuses to let go. You feel the tension rise steadily although there are some blackly comic moments in there which are bound to make even the most jaded horror fan grin.

A film which takes it's cues from classic base under siege movies like The Thing From Another World or Assault on Precinct 13 rather than your typical Wolf Man fayre, this newly restored Blu-ray from Second Sight Films of Marshall's classic was an absolute joy to watch.

One line in Dog Soldiers always puzzles me. Emma Cleasby's character Megan tells the troops they are a good four hour drive from the nearest town, that being Fort William.

Four hour drive?

That would put the farm house somewhere between Carlisle and Blackpool.

All depends on what route you take

I saw it years ago and remember it being very powerful, disturbing, and thought-provoking. I thought I owned it, but it seems I don't.

One for the watchlist I think.

Being a fan of Johnny Knoxville and his gang being idiots I was interested in watching this and heard mixed reviews about it. What we see in the trailer are the funny bits and by the time we see them in the feature film the laughs are gone. Loosely based on the park "Action Park"by Eugene "Gene" Mulvihill and his cutting corners on safety, Knoxville doesnt hold back on the stunts himself and happy to be in the firing line. Aside from being a comedy there is a bit of drama in this and shows how the lead actor can take things seriously. I still wouldn't go out my way to buy it at a high price.

Forgot to say that there's an interesting documentary called Class Action Park. It's all about the real park and the trails and tribulations, it's really quite good
